Connor Overton why is he the 5th starter?

Has anyone looked at Overton’s track record?

    7 minor league seasons
13 games STARTED total in the minors.
    2 years major league experience
    1-1 record
Started 4 games for Reds April and May pitched good but had back issues. Came back for 2 games in September nowhere near as good.

Now he seems to be the 5th starter based on a non existent “TRACK RECORD”

Read his lifetime stats and then please prove me wrong.

Because the Reds failed to meaningfully address the lack of starting pitching depth at the MLB level (their big $ addition, Luke Weaver, will start on the IL) so he was battling with others who had equally unimpressive track records.

All the choices suck. They had to pick somebody.

Pitching is a team effort and the struggles of one pitcher carries over to following games and impacts everyone else in the pen and the rotation. The Reds repeat the same mistakes they've made before. They really need to trade a position player for a starting pitcher who can give reliable innings. They don't need spectacular, but there really needs to be reliability in the rotation to keep from throwing the entire team into chaos.

Overton’s the fifth starter because the other four guys are better?

Overton, Weaver, Anderson, Williamson, all will be available as fifth starter over the season. Reds aren’t spending for anyone much better so those guys will jointly be fifth starter.

Just ridiculous it’s at this point. Two or even one more close to league average starting pitcher would have made this season far more interesting.

No chance to compete with these options at the back end of the rotation.

Re: Connor Overton why is he the 5th starter?

I posted this one of the many threads about the Reds rotation:

Last year there were 75 MLB starters with an ERA above 5, who averaged 145 IP. That means that nearly every team had one or more Connor Overton’s as their 5th starter. The Reds are not unique in having a guy with a poor track record start games for them.

I imagine there are similar threads over on Cardinalszone, when the Cardinals announced that Taylor Motter has made their team. Reds fans might remember Motter from last year, though they probably did everything they could to forget him. He was dreadful. He played in 2 games, 6 PA’s, 1 hit and 3 errors at 3B.

Motter wasn’t good enough to stick with the 100 loss Reds last year. His track record is 5 seasons, .191 BA, .572 OPS, -5.5 UZR for a total of -1.9 fWAR. And he just made the Cardinals opening day roster.

Because this season is a lost season and someone needs to eat innings. Pretty simple.

The most he’s ever thrown as a pro is 58 innings, so he’s not going to be eating many.

He was a pretty effective innings eater before his freak back injury last season.

Honestly, if you’re at a point you’re rooting for players to get injured in hopes the reds are as bad as possible you should probably find something else to do with your time.

There is the rub. They need innings and they have relievers in the 4th and 5th spot and even worse options once they are used up.

This team needs a 30 start pitcher who can give them 170 meh innings. The Reds don't have that in the 4th or 5th spot and the staff will spring leaks elsewhere because of it. Go get one that they can keep for 3 or 4 years.
