    Reds Transactions 2023 Season

Mariners Acquire Nick Solak From Reds

The Reds have traded outfielder Nick Solak to the Mariners for cash, both teams announced. Seattle had an opening on the 40-man roster and immediately optioned Solak to Triple-A Tacoma. No additional move was necessary.

Solak never played a regular season game as a Red. Cincinnati acquired the right-handed hitter from the Rangers at the beginning of the offseason. It was a cash transaction that saw the Reds add a player who was a few years removed from being a well-regarded prospect. Cincinnati gave Solak a look as part of a wide-open outfield mix in Spring Training, but he collected just two hits in 20 at-bats during exhibition play.

Mariners Acquire Nick Solak From Reds (continued)

Cincinnati gave Solak a look as part of a wide-open outfield mix in Spring Training, but he collected just two hits in 20 at-bats during exhibition play.

That lackluster exhibition showing pushed Solak down the outfield depth chart. Cincinnati designated him for assignment yesterday as they set their Opening Day roster, clearing a 40-man spot to add a pair of relievers and infielder Jason Vosler to the big league group. Solak’s stay in DFA limbo lasted only a little more than 24 hours, as Seattle stepped in to jump the waiver order.

Why would a contending team pay good money for a player who couldn't land a spot on a non-contender?

minor league depth. I'm sure the "good money" was the waiver price plus $1

I know a guy who has a barstool chat relationship with an agent who said that agents and front offices have a gentleman's agreement that this sort of transaction occurs because everybody needs to get paid. If you deal with agents, you move "property" that keeps them in business and thus, more inclined to take your call when/if a real "property" comes along. So it's kind of the business of the business to make sure these players are shuffled.
The organization is going to pay somebody to fill that roster spot and there are some rules about them being actual professional veterans. In other words, you can't stock the Bats roster with 22 NDFA kids from the islands who aren't even old enough to vote.
Look at Triple-A rosters and there are 3 kinds of players on them. Solak meets the criteria. Some big-league time, the ability to at least argue with an umpire in two languages and available to fill in for 2 weeks in case Senzel twists a bottle cap wrong.

It’s a good question. My question is why was Solak good enough as depth for Mariners but not the weaker Reds?

I could understand it if Reds AAA was brimming over with talent, but I’ve seen the roster and it’s not.

Maybe Solak asked out. Or maybe Mariners simply had more roster room. Odd transaction IMO.

Not that hard to understand. The Mariners had an open spot on their 40 man roster, the Reds did not.

This forced the Reds to DFA Solak to make room for those that were added for opening day. The Mariners claimed him, because they had an open spot on their 40 man roster for him.

Step back for a minute. Mariners had room for this guy but Reds didn’t have room. What’s wrong with this picture?

Barry Bonds, Joe Price and David Price weren't around yet when I saw this as a kid. I can't remember who the other OFers were. Its one you historians can spend time with.

Reds have been too busy collecting every retread you can find. Mariners built a roster with reasonable talent and had some open spots as a result.
