    Re: Hunter Greene Part 2

Just to address the Hunter Greene innings debate, I'll present my case urging for extreme caution:

    1. Hunter Greene is 23 years old. He's still a baby.
    2. He has a very light innings history:
    - 2017 Sat out his senior high school season was drafted and pitched 4 and a third innings after signing,
    - 2018 Made 18 starts at Dayton for a total of 68 and a third innings averaging less than 4 innings per start and then was shut down and underwent Tommy John Surgery
    - 2019 Sat out the season recovering from Surgery
    - 2020 Season Cancelled due to Covid
    - 2021 Made 21 Minor League starts totaling 106 and a third innings
    - 2022 Made 24 big league starts totaling 125 and two thirds innings

I'd say this year, 150 to 160 IP would be appropriate. If he makes 30 starts that's 5 and third IP per start.

2024 should be the time to take the gloves off. He'll be 24 and will be ready for close to 200 IP. This year is still a season to be careful. He started out pitching less than 75 innings over 4 years. He's still building up. The good news is there is still time. Next year he should be full go and hopefully, that is when it will start to be important as far as team contention goes.

Greene knows how to throw. He's still learning how to pitch. Pitching is not about overwhelming the batter. Its about messing up his timing. Its about deception, changing speeds, and weak contact. Its about throwing a third or fourth pitch for strikes.

I remain unconcerned about Hunter Greene. He doesn’t turn 24 for a few more months, we know he has the ability and now it’s just a matter of getting it altogether. Not like this is some great team and we’re being horribly held back by Hunter not going 6-7 innings every single start.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Reds are wasting Greene cheap your years and by going to cheap route will prove to cost more in the long run

2022 - 4.45 era 1.22 Whip and 5-13 win loss record. Should have been in AAA and not service time in a throw away season

2023 still early. But he’s learning again on the job

Agree completely. Called up way too soon. Had a 6 game hot stretch at the end of the year last year, but was a 5+ ERA until then. Still building innings and working on secondary stuff. He hardly has any minor league innings under his belt. Not even 200 minor league innings. He's talented enough that he'll be better than a lot of alternatives, but it is a waste of his cheap years.

This is true, but he needs to face MLB players.

Problem will be if the Reds pay the price

I don't see that Greene has anything more to learn in Triple-A, unless we want him to perfect a third pitch on the minor-league mounds. If he is still flailing after 8 or 10 starts, you might put him in long relief but there's no way he goes back to Louisville.

A third pitch is exactly what he needs. Going through a line-up with two pitches multiplle times is why he's having middle inning issues.

Are we certain he won't ever actually get that pitch? It isn't as if the pennant is pinned to it in 2023. Let the guy pitch and figure it out with coaching, great film room and training in GABP. Triple-A is for rehab.

He probably will, but he'll be arb eligible with one foot out the door by the time he does. I'd rather he do it without the clock ticking. As you say, they don't need him in the big leagues right now (well they do because they completely ignored adding competent starters, but that's all part of the same problem).

As for the coaching I don't buy it. If the minor league coaches, who are way more important btw, aren't good enough, then get new coaches don't rush kids to the big leagues after 180 minor league innings because you don't trust the minor league coaches.

Maybe Greene should have been at AAA last year. It’s an arguable point with the benefit of hindsight. But not now.

Greene is sufficiently advanced to now break in against the big boys. That’s what he’s doing and I think he’ll be fine. Growing pains, sure, but Reds are a non-contender so I wouldn’t fret about them.

Um ... I am not suggesting they don't trust the developmental coaches. They can always bring a good coach to Cincy. I have spent way too much time on this topic, so I won't continue with it. Hope you can relate to that.

He was excellent for his last like 10 starts or so last year right? And he started throwing the change up a lot more then too.

No idea why he’s not doing so now, but he’ll adjust. I’m not remotely concerned.

    Re: Hunter Greene Part 2

I want the Reds to first prove that they can develop starting pitchers before worrying about their service time. I guess they did with Castillo, but he came from another organization. Mahle is the best they've developed since Cueto, but for the most part, the Reds have not proven that they can do it consistently.
