And, he’s a rookie! He doesn’t have the flash and tools of Elly, but both Steer and McLain are incredibly impressive in their baseball IQ, approach and maturity. I think we may be looking at a few perennial all stars in the making on this team. It’s just so incredibly exciting after enduring so much disappointment over these past (many) years. Go Reds!

Bumping this just to lol at the twitter analyst that suggested "selling high" on Steer about a month ago. Can't find it, but I think about it every time he does something amazing as a Red (which is most days).

What I think of is all the moaning over the return for Mahle. Reds FO really hit a grand slam with that one.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Good stuff there. Servo was the voice of reason and I chortled as Mahle’s family sent a zinger Doug’s way. Also that is the origin of my Todd Frazier comp to Spencer.

    Spencer Steer is 1/13 players in MLB with a SLG% over .500 & a K% under 20%

Add in a 10% or more BB rate, he goes to 1/7 with all 3.

    Those hitters;

    Ronald Acuna Jr.
    Mookie Betts
    Freddie Freeman
    José Ramirez
    Yandy Diaz
    Ketel Marte
    Spencer Steer
Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

Is Spencer Steer the Reds first-half MVP?
    • played in 81 of Reds 84 games
    • hit for average, power, on-base
    • tied club lead in HR (14), RBI (50)
    • played 1B, 3B, even LF, a new position
    • balanced platoon split lets him play every day

How long before Steer catches Carroll in most categories, and will he be recognized for it?

Spencer Steer saw all of the infielders moving up in the Reds' system. He wanted to be the one who moved positions. He’s the guy that David Bell knows can hit anywhere in the lineup.

Steer's consistency in new situations has defined his rookie year.

I want to Steer to get his props, but Corbin is also a plus defender who is leading baseball in runs created on the basepaths. He's not getting the attention he's getting just for his bat.

By contrast, Steer has been average on the bases and has been one of the worst defenders in baseball. (insert the *achtkhually, defensive metrics suck and my eyes tell me he's been pretty solid* defense here)

As it stands, Carroll deserves all the attention he's getting. But Steer is undeniably among the most productive rookie batters (as is McLain, on a per/PA basis) and is in line for some ROY votes.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I'm going to be that guy. Spencer Steer has easily been the Reds best player over the entire first half, but Matt McLain taking over at SS jump started the offense and settled the defense down. These arguments sometimes come down to the interpretation of the word "valuable" and if somebody wants to play that game, McLain has a case.

Back before McLain when we were winning….Friedl and/or Fraley were right in the middle of it almost every time….and I did was always on base

He has a case and i think Diaz does as well. I suspect other pitchers in the staff would have blown more games thsn he. I know his innings are not much and it may be a stretch for a reliever to be MVP, but he warrants a mention
