Minor League Game Threads for Wednesday, April 12, 2023

LOUISVILLE 2-8 L6 6:35 PM EDT - It' difficult to compile a six-game losing streak over the first ten games of the season, but the Bats are always willing to go the extra mile. Levi Stoudt (1.08) will be making his third start on the season. Stoudt, who came over in the much-despised Luis Castillo trade, has pitched well across his first two starts. He has just one earned run in his 8.1 innings on the mound, allowing 3 hits while putting away 8 batters on strikes. He has been a bit wild, walking 6.

TJ Hopkins is on an 8-game hitting streak, while Chuckie Robinson has hit safely in 6 straight.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Matt McLain is 0 for his last 18. He has been 0-12 when putting the ball in play, which is kinda unlucky.

CHATTANOOGA 2-2 L2 7:15 PM EDT - The Lookouts look to get back to winning baseball tonight behind big righthander Christian Roa (-.--). Roa has been nothing if not consistent so far during his minor league career, posting ERAs of 3.53 and 3.56 in his first two seasons.

Hot hitter: Allan Cerda - .364/.563/.727/1.290.
Not hitter: Noelvi Marte - .125/.222/.125/.347.

Chattanooga is dead last in the league, sporting a batting average of .142 and an OPS of .562.

DAYTON 1-3 L1 7:05 PM EDT - Dayton will try to get back on the good foot tonight. The Dragons will be sending Carson Rudd (18.00) out for the second time this season. Rudd only allowed one hit last time out. Unfortunately, it was a home run which followed a HBP and two BB. Ouch! Edwin Arroyo was placed on the 7-day IL today.

Offensively, the Dragons have shown great plate discipline, drawing nearly 8 walks per contest. The team's 31 walks are 10 more than the next highest team total.

DAYTONA 4-0 W4 6:35 PM EDT - The invincible Tortugas are currently in first place in the FSL with their spotless 4-0 record. Who knows who is starting the game tonight, but does it really even matter? Daytona has outscored the opposition 32-14 over the first four contests, a veritable tsunami of fun.

Jean Correa has been added to the roster. The righthanded pitcher was signed out Indy ball last July. He is 25, so he better start expediting his career path. MiLB.com has him listed at 6'1", 145. So, we know he's hungry.

The Tortugas are OPSing .857 as a team, next highest is at .727. They rank second in the league in ERA at 2.37. BTW, Clearwater's staff has been ridiculous so far: 16 hits in 35 innings and a 1.29 ERA.

DAYTONA - The perfect record is on the line early tonight as Daytona trails 4-0 in the top of the third. Rob Hensey got ransacked for all 4 runs. Newbie Jean Correa has just been lit up by the first batter that he faced. The score is now 5-0.

6 up and 6 down for Turtle hitters.

LOUISVILLE - The Bats are down 1-zip in the bottom of the third. Levi Stoudt has surrendered a solo shot, and that's where the game stands.

    Nick Senzel has walked twice.
Joey Votto has singled and walked.

LOUISVILLE - Levi Stoudt implodes in the bottom half of the third. Louisville trails 4-0. Daniel Duarte is on the mound for Louisville.

CHATTANOOGA - Christian Roa had a short night. BB, K, BB, K, BB, BB, HR. Showers. Five runs, no waiting. Connor Curlis came close to reprising that effort. He loaded the bases before finally recording out number 3.

DAYTON - The Dragons took the opposite tack, scoring 4 times in the bottom of the first.

Carson Rudd has thrown 3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing 1 hit and striking out 5.

Austin Hendrick doubled. That was followed up by walks to Nelson Matheu and Austin Callahan. Tyler Callihan then cleared the bases with a grand slam (1).
Matheu Nelson has now made it 5-0 with a home run (1).

DAYTONA - These must be Ninja Turtles as they have gotten back into the game with 3 runs of their own. They now trail just 5-3 in the 5th.

Jean Correa is still on the mound, having survived his first-batter jitters.

Wendel Marrero has a solo shot (1).
Hector Marrero has homered (2) for the second night in a row. This came with Leonardo Balcazar on first via a walk. Both Rodriguez home runs have gone to the opposite field.

Disappointed to see Matt. Stoudt. Roa. Not performing like you know. Top prospects.

DAYTONA - Spot the opposition a five-run lead? No problem. They score 1 more in the 6th to make it 5-4 on a Sal Stewart walk and a Cade Hunter double. And then they really get to work after everyone stretches in the 7th.

Balcazar walks. Rodriguez walks. And then a sac fly by Stewart brings home the tying run. Ariel Almonte doubles home the go-ahead marker. Victor Acosta triples home another run. Logan Tanner walks to put runners on the corners with two away. Daytona leads 7-5. Pitching change.

LOUISVILLE RECAP - A season that held much promise for Louisville's first campaign above .500 since 2011 is quickly going to hell in a handbasket. Last night was unlucky number 7. 7 consecutive losses. That drops their overall record to 2-9. Both Rochester and Gwinnett are nipping at their heels in the battle for the basement at 2-8. So, there is no time for the Bats to rest on their laurels.

Starter Levi Stoudt stunk it up for 2+ innings, giving up 4 runs. Relievers Ryan Nutof and Jared Solomon provided no relief. Bright spots out of the pen were: Lucas Sims (1 IP/0 R/2 K), Daniel Duarte (1.1 IP/0 R/2 K) and Zach Brown (1 IP/0 R/1 K).

At the dish, there was not much to right home about. 5 hits total, 4 singles and a blast off the bat of Chuckie Robinson (1) that extended his hitting skein to 7 games. Nick Senzel walked twice, while Joey Votto walked three times and added a base knock.

    Onward and downward.

CHATTANOOGA RECAP - The Lookouts tumble 9-5. Tennessee's own Dolly Parton might be able to use that final score for inspiration.

Starter Christian Roa did not survive the first inning, allowing 5 runs.
Relievers Connor Curlis gave up 2 more.
Stevie Branche (5 Ks over 2 IP) and Mac Sceroler (7 Ks over 3 IP) both were dominant, but reached for unearned runs.
Eduardo Salazar, a starter pretty much his entire career, made his second scoreless relief appearance in a row.

    Jose Torres singled and walked.
Noelvi Marte singled and homered (1).
    Rece Hinds singled and walked.
James Free brought the lumber - 3 singles and a double.
    Ashton Creal singled and doubled.

DAYTON RECAP - And, now for some good news. Dayton scored 4 times in the first, and strolled to a 7-3 victory.

    Carson Rudd pitched like an ace: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K.
Manuel Cachutt and Jake Gozzo each contributed a scoreless frame.
Myles Gayman allowed 2 runs over 2 innings.

    Austin Hendrick doubled and walked.
Matheu Nelson homered (1) and walked.
    Austin Callahan singled and walked.
Tyler Callihan homered (1). It was a grand slam.

7 different Dragons drew bases on balls.

DAYTONA RECAP - The Tortugas kept their record spotless at 5-0, coming back from a 5-run deficit.

Arij Fransen, out of the pen, was the star on the mound. 3 scoreless innings with 4 K.
Rob Hensey, Jean Correa and Zach Maxwell all were nicked for runs.

At the dish, Daytona took full advantage of 11 bases on balls.
Leonardo Balcazar walked and scored 3 times apiece.
Hector Rodriguez walked and homered (2) for the second straight game.
Sal Stewart walked twice and lifted a sac fly.
    Ariel Almonte singled and doubled.
Cade Hunter also singled and doubled.
    Victor Acosta tripled.
    Logan Hunter walked twice.
Wendel Marrero homered (1), walked and was struck by a pitch.

Daytona has 6 hitters in the lineup OPSing over 1.000: Jorge (1.000), Balcazar (1.049), Rodriguez (1.038), Almonte (1.063), Acosta (1.047) and Marrero (1.489).
