Minor League Game Thread for Saturday, April 15, 2023 Tax Day Edition

DAYTON 2-5 L2 1:05 PM EDT - Julian Aguiar (0.00) is the Dragons starter this afternoon. Drafted by the Reds in the 12th round out of high school, Aguiar has presented excellent periperals to date in his minor-league career. 11.1 K/9, and just 2.3 BB/9. That works.

After being held to only one hit last night, Dayton is now hitting a miserable .159 as a team.

One assumes this will find its own level. I never was impressed with Midwest League hitting but .159 suggests strongly that the pitchers got plenty of work in the spring and the hitters spent a lot of time running laps and listening to coaches tell them how to field ground balls.

DAYTON - Julian Aguiar yielded a home run to the second batter that he faced, but he has settled down nicely. That is the only run that he has allowed through 3.

Jack Rogers smacked a three-run bomb (1) in the second inning following a walk to Austin Hendrick and a single off the bat of Justice Thompson.

    3-1 Dragons.

LOUISVILLE 2-11 L9 4:05 PM EDT - I'm not sure that people are aware of the magnitude of playing 14 games and compiling a 10-game losing streak. That is nigh on impossible. But, that is what the Bats are the cusp of. Only a fine performance by Chase Anderson (3.60) stands in the way. Casey Legumina won't be around if it does happen. He has been called up to replace Connor Overton (sore elbow). I would suspect that it will be a short stay for Casey, and he will be sent back down when they activate Luke Weaver. Legumina has yet to pitch in the major leagues. So, congratulations are in order. Anderson should feel right at home today, as he pitched FOR the Toledo Mudhens in 2022.

Matt McLain certainly seems to be a ballplayer. He leads Louisville in home runs (3), stolen bases (4), hits (12) and runs batted in (10).

DAYTON - Aguiar ran into trouble in the top of the 5th, and has been replaced by Donovan Benoit. The game is knotted up at 3 apiece.

DAYTON - The two bullpens took over and the score remained knotted up at 3-3 until the bottom of the 7th when the Dragons struck for 2 runs.

A walk to Luis Chevalier preceded a two-run poke by Mathue Nelson (2).

Owen Holt is in trouble in the top of the 8th. Single, error, sac fly and single. The lead has been cut in half, 5-4. There are still two runners on with 2 outs. A 10-pitch punch out, and it is on to the bottom of the 8th.

Matt McLain moves another 360 feet closer to Cincinnati.

DAYTON RECAP - Dayton moves its record to 3-5 with a 6-4 win over Great Lakes.

Julian Aguiar permitted 3 runs in 4.1 innings. He fanned 4 and did not walk a batter.
The bullpen took over and was charged with just one unearned run the rest of the way. Kudos to Benoit (1.2), Cachutt (1), Holt (1) and Gozzo (1).

    At the plate:
Tyler Callihan singled and walked twice.
Matheu Nelson singled, homered (2) and walked. His OPS is a scintillating .978.
Justice Thompson was perfect at the dish today with 2 singles, a double and a walk.
Jack Rogers cracked a three-run shot (1) and walked.
Luis Chevalier singled twice and walked.

Dragon hitters keep working the count, forcing 8 bases on balls.

LOUISVILLE - Shhh. The Bats are echolocating a victory. They lead 3-1 in the 6th.

Chase Anderson was rock solid, allowing a single run in five innings. He walked 2 and fanned 4.
Joel Kuhnel is on out of the pen.

Matt McLain slugged his 4th home run on the season.
Chuckie Robinson keeps chugging along. A double and a walk. His consecutive hit streak is up to 10 games.
Steven Layton has laced out a pair of two-baggers.

I think Senzel will get DFA’d in mid May and McLain will be his replacement.

LOUISVILLE RECAP - The Bats 9-game losing string goes by the boards, as Louisville prevails 7-3.

Chase Anderson set the tone with a solid 5 innings of 1-run ball. He struck out 4.
The bullpen was hit or miss. Kuhnel and Lucas Sims hit. Guerrero and Hunter Strickland missed. Sims is now unscored upon in 3 outings. That would be a nice boost.

Alejo Lopez singled twice and walked.
Matt McLain singled and homered. He is OPSing .961.
    Stephen Layton doubled twice.
Chuckie Robinson sold his soul to the devil over the winter, obviously. The one-man wrecking crew reached base and scored all four trips to the dish, and fell a triple shy of the cycle. Single, double, home run (2), walk and stolen base.

Joey Votto sat out for the second game in 3 nights.
Will Benson has brought his Cincy stroke to Louisville. 4 Ks in 5 PA.

CHATTANOOGA RECAP - The Lookouts brought their hitting shoes, and had just enough pitching to squeak by 7-6.

Starter Sam Benschoter survived 4 rough innings. 4 hits, 4 walks over 4 innings. Only 2 runs allowed though.
Carson Spiers and Tommy Eveld hung zeros on the board.
Pedro Garcia made things a little more interesting than necessary by surrendering 3 solo blasts in the 8th inning.
Eduardo Salazar allowed a run across 2 frames.

Jacob Hurtubise singled twice and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 times out of the leadoff spot.
Nick Quintana singled, doubled and walked.
Allan Cerda doubled and walked twice. 1.007 OPS.
    Jose Torres walked twice.
Ivan Johnson doubled and was hit by a pitch. He is off to an extremely rough start to the season. BA .083. OPS .304.

Daniel Vellojjin is even worse than Johnson. BA .048. OPS .255.
