    Blake Dunn

After battling past injuries, Reds minor leaguer Blake Dunn commanding attention

In some ways, the clock is ticking on Cincinnati Reds minor league outfielder Blake Dunn, the oldest position player on the High-A Dayton Dragons roster. Then in other ways, this is just the beginning.

Injuries limited the 24-year-old Dunn to a combined 48 games over the last two seasons. He was a 15th-round pick in 2021, so there is typically a little less patience compared to guys who receive large signing bonuses at the top of the draft.

“The thing we really like about him is he plays the game kind of like a righthanded version of (TJ) Friedl,” said Shawn Pender, the Reds’ farm director. “He does a lot of things fundamentally sound. He’s an aggressive hitter, but he’s really developed plate coverage and a better understanding of who he is offensively. He just plays the game the right way. You know you are going to get great effort and a significant amount of production.”

Dunn was named the Midwest League player of the week Monday after he hit .550 in a six-game series with three homers, 10 RBI, nine runs and four stolen bases.

His speed plays up – he was a three-time Michigan state champion in the 300-meter hurdles in high school – because he’s a good baserunner. He doesn’t have a ton of raw power, but if he continues to show strong plate discipline, he should hit for average. He can handle all three spots in the outfield.

He could end up being a Josh VanMeter-type player and find himself on big-league rosters until he is in his 30s.

    Re: Blake Dunn

I've been impressed with his approach at the plate and he's to top 5 OF defender in our system. He seems like a veteran out there. As for not having power, I'm not so sure about that. Is he a 30 home run guy? Probably not, but I could see him, if the progression keeps going, hitting 20. Let's talk again if he's doing this or close at AA.

The Midwest League's Player of the Month for April, Blake Dunn is still rolling well into May. Dunn was among three Dragons players to hit a homer during Saturday's 11-0 win over Lansing. Dayton's center fielder, Dunn entered Sunday batting .321 with a 1.086 OPS and a team-leading six homers. The 24-year-old was a 15th round selection by the Reds in the 2021 MLB Draft.

They probably don't want to spoil his success by calling him up to the next level too soon, but they must be itching to make that decision. It's good to feel success in order to sustain it for a while even if the call-up is one that is needed. It's definitely tied to his being much older than everyone else, no doubt, and the increased level of competition will make his adjustment more difficult, but he can feel what it's like to do things right at the plate for another month, then the chances that he has a successful transition to the next level will increase. I do hope they wait until June to call him up.

That's quite a compliment...a RH-hitting version of T. J. Friedl. What we've seen at the major league level of Friedl was seen at every minor league level Friedl played in.

    Re: Blake Dunn

Since that homer on May 6th, mentioned above, Blake has gone 5 for 25 (.200), with all five hits being singles. Worse, he has 10 Ks in those 25 ABs and only one walk.

    Ouch!
