    Is Casali just that good?

I mentioned in the game thread last night that I felt better about Williamson's debut because Casali was catching so I decided to look up the catcher ERA for the Reds so far.

    Maile 426 PA 6.21 ERA
    Stephenson 704 PA 5.48 ERA
    Casali 503 PA 3.18 ERA

Yeah there's some small sample size, but Casli has been excellent his entire career even on the lousy 2018 Reds pitching staff.

Re: Is Casali just that good?

Its not just the stats. If you watch the games there is a massive difference when Castali is behind the plate compared to Stephenson. Casali looks so much more comfortable and natural back there. He is great at receiving the ball. Putting the mit in a great position for the pitcher to target. Stephenson kind of stabs at the ball.

Not sure what to think of Tyler Stephenson at this point. He looks really rough behind the plate right now, good arm throwing to 2nd, but that isn't enough to be an every day catcher defensively. His bat is absolutely not carrying him right now. This is exactly why I questioned those that said he should be extended.
What would you say.....ya do here?

100% in agreement... Love having Casali behind the plate he's always had the reputation as being a great game caller and very good at handling a pitching staff.

The Reds Pitching Staff has thrown 2 shutouts tis season.

It's no surprise Casali has been behind the plate for both of'em.

Casali also had great success with the Giants staff:
    https://theathletic.com/2776632/2021...te-plus-minus/

That brings us to our next portrait of dominance. It isn’t an ace having an all-time season. It isn’t a relief pitcher who never blew a save. It isn’t a pitcher at all.

    It’s a catcher. A backup catcher.

It’s current Giants backup catcher Curt Casali.

You can look it up: the Giants are 33-8 in Casali’s starts this season — the same record the Tigers posted with McLain on the mound in ’68. Casali has caught eight of the Giants’ 13 shutouts. He recovered from an abysmal 7-for-70 start at the plate to become a consistently heavy hitter. He has won the admiration and affection of his teammates for his professionalism, his focus and his relentlessness to exploit every advantage between the lines.
To Kapler’s point, the Giants are 19-3 in Casali’s starts since he rejoined the club from the IL.

The team continues to pitch well with him behind the plate, too. Last Thursday, he caught yet another shutout in a 7-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. His 2.70 catcher’s ERA is the best in the major leagues (minimum 40 starts).
“The guys we've had for the most part have been serviceable at this level.”

Every time I read a thread that says the Reds should cut Curt I think to myself that he's on the team for everything that isn't made out of wood and weighs less than 40 ounces

His bat was really solid his last tour here, would be nice to get back over .700 OpS.
Catcher’s ERA is a very incomplete indicator, but even the eye test says that he far superior to Ty defensively. Would be nice if he could teach some of that, but not sure Ty is aware that he is well below average with all the hype he’s received since being drafted.

I'll say yes. I always thought Casali was a better Catcher than Barnhart even though Barnhart has the 2 gold gloves. He's definitely a better handler of Pitchers IMO.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

This is starting to explain why the Reds decided to limit Stephenson to 65 games as starting catcher.

Maile is also known as a great pitching staff handler, so I don't know that I'm ready to make any sweeping declarations based on those #s

Would it be feasible to split playing time between Casali and Maile, and send Stephenson packing?
