    This is crazy
    With New York still leading 1-0 lead before the bottom half of the fifth inning, the umpires administered a foreign substance check on Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt.

    The umpires allowed Schmidt to stay on the mound after Schmidt cleaned off his wrist. Reds manager David Bell was ejected while disputing the umpires’ decision to allow Schmidt to continue his scoreless outing.

    Charlie Goldsmith
    @CharlieG__
    Crew Chief Brian O'Nora: "David (Bell) was upset that we made him clean it off and not eject him. I explained the situation. He kept going I told him it was enough and he kept going. I had no choice but to eject him."

    Yankees pitcher has foreign substance on his person. Umps say go clean it off and come on back, Sparky. Bell says , hey, that's not fair. He was role playing Gaylord Perry out there and you let him go take a shower and come back to the mound. Ump says, shut your mouth, Dave. Dave says Schmidt had more petroleum jelly out there than Don Sutton and you let him continue. Ump says that's enough disrespect ---outta here Bell!

    Modern baseball is weird, wacky stuff.

    From Goldsmith:

    David Bell said he’d prefer not to talk about the Schmidt sticky stuff situation. He said, “It all played out in a pretty obvious way.”

    Jonathan India said, “I think that’s the fourth time that’s happened with the Yankees.”

    He wouldn't be playing if that was true.

    O’Nora’s scorecard. He was terrible, missed 11 out of 58 called strikes, but consistently terrible
