I like that this group of guys don't give up. They keep playing til the game's over. I don't blame the players. They do their best. But, like you correctly stated early in the season, MYERS SUCKS!!!

McLain homers, but Cards jump Ashcraft for 8-5 win
Graham Ashcraft struggled for his second consecutive start and dug the Reds a hole they could never climb out of in losing to the Cardinals 8-5 Tuesday night at GABP.

Reds rookie Matt McLain jacked his 1st ML HR in a losing effort....an opposite field 2-run shot off Adam Wainwright.

Ashcraft: With the beleaguered state of the bullpen after Monday night, he had to wear it
5 IN, 10 H, 7 R. He struck out 3 in the 1st inning, but also surrendered a solo homer to Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt, who entered the game 1 for his last 21, homered twice.

Shakeup: Friedl hit leadoff. India (DH) started in the No. 3 spot in the order for the first time in his MLB career. He singled and scored.

Offense: Seven Reds contributed at least one hit. TJ Friedl had 2 2B, BB in return from IL, McLain HR, BB, 2 RBI, Spence Steer extended his hit streak to six with a 1B, Kevin Newman 2 H.

    1st: Jake Fraley 2-out RBI 2B, 1-0 Reds
    3rd: McLain 2-run HR, 4-3 Cards
5th: McLain RBI groundout, 7-4 Cards
    6th: Senzel RBI 2B, 7-5 Cards

Brutal: Home plate umpire Will Little was a disaster. Cards 3B Nolan Arenado and manager Oli Marmol were ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the middle of the 3rd inning. ML umpiring has to be at an all-time low this season. Couple that with the disastrous state of official scoring, how we lookin'?

    Assessments of Ashcraft's night:
Brantley - poor command of cutter, often too much break and often too little break
LeCure - Cards eliminated his 3rd pitch, which he didn't throw much, and were looking for the other two in the right spots
Ashcraft - he dwelt too much on his bad results and didn't brush it off and lost focus on subsequent hitters

Convince me that ML umpires have ever been worse than they are now.

LeClure statement is confusing. The Cards eliminated his 3rd pitch which Ash didn’t throw very much. So how did they eliminate it? Sounds like Ash did that all on his own?

I would bet heavily that the Cardinals were able to figure out what he was throwing. They have always been masters of stealing signs, noticing the slightest bit of tipping, and they were swinging like they knew what was coming. Then Ashcraft had a clean final inning, probably because he and the Reds figured out what the Cardinals were seeing, and adjusted.

I think what he meant was because Ashcraft didn't throw his sinker much the Cardinals stopped looking for it. Therefore eliminating it and just looking for his fastball and Slider in certain areas.

Something like fastball up and in and slider low and away

You know there was a Ralph Beard that played MLB back about the same time as UK's Ralph Beard. I had always thought it the UK ralph Beard. Turns out it wasn't. This one was from Cincinnati and played part of one season with the Cardinals. See what you can learn on RZ.

I agree and I love it. Where else can you be discussing the Reds and Cards in a gameday thread and also get info about what the Rifleman, Chuck Connors, had in common with Ron Reed and Cotton Nash? lol

As for Mr. Connors, another little tidbit. He served most of his time during WWII serving in Ft. Campbell, KY as a tank instructor. And now you really know the rest of the story. RZ entertains and informs !!!
