Looks like Connor Phillips has been bumped to Louisville.

    Finally.

I'm guessing they'll want him to get 5-7 starts, similarly to Abbott before bringing him up.

Krall might insist he's there big deadline acquisition.

Love that. Any word on whether Richardson will join him, and/or if one of the Dragons' big three will replace him?

Phillips is two years younger than Abbott and will have an innings limit. Any big "deadline acquisition" needs to be able to pitch through September. I think he could be a stop gap until Lodolo comes back, but expecting any thing more in 2023 is pushing it.

If they're following the Verducci Effect, his innings limit would be around 140 or 150 innings.

That's more than enough for him to have a full season's worth.

So, 2021's Sonny Gray up to last year's Luis Castillo.

    Re: Midsummer Notes & Thoughts

Apparently, Rece Hinds is also being promoted.

That's a mild shock for a few reasons.

Least important, I suspect, is that the Bats have a rather full coterie of OF bats-- someone will have to go among Nick Martini, Michael Siani, TJ Hopkins, Stuart Fairchild, and Henry Ramos. If you want minor league free agents to sign, you need to treat them well-- jettisoning someone at the halfway point of the season is a hard decision that may influence future AAAA guys. I'm guessing Ramos is released, opening up a spot for CES or a pitcher on the 40-man roster.

Secondly, bringing up Hinds and Marte hamstrings the Bats into playing CES at two total positions. Previously, he could play 1B, 3B, DH, and tried both OF corners. Now, with the addition of two legitimate prospects at two of those spots, he's likely to play just 1B and DH. Unless, of course, he's brought up to the parent club.

Finally, Hinds himself is not a finished product. His K rate is miserably high-- 10 full percentage points above the highest K rates of legitimate prospects. Perhaps the Reds are banking on the fact that K rates are lesser in AAA, and they'll get a clearer understanding of Hinds' plate coverage with his new swing in AAA. They might also be polishing him up as a prospect for an eventual deal-- if Hinds can limit his K rate, they can then point to that new, improved rate and new swing as the "new" Hinds. (And charge accordingly.)

(They might be doing the same thing with Marte, btw. A 21-year-old in AAA is a top 25 guy-- especially if he hits like he has so far in AA. With the ball the way it is, any jump in production could see seen as proof that he's a top 25 guy. Other teams, then, might pay through the nose. If both Hinds and Marte hit well, the Reds suddenly have two of the premium chips that might be available on the trade market. A team like Cleveland might well pay up for either of them.)

I don't know when he changed his setup, but since he went on his HR binge, his K rate has dropped to a respectable 22% and his BB rate has gone up to 13%.

That's definitely how the Reds should sell it if they plan on dealing him.

Adrian Reyes one-upped Matt McLain's effort from yesterday. He doubled twice, tripled and homered. Of his 11 hits on the season, 9 are for extra bases. His stat line in the DSL reads: .216/.459/.510/.969. Reyes has struck out a lot (21 times in 74 PA), but walked even more (23 BB). Reyes is 18.

I love the call ups to AAA. Southern League pre-tacked balls put the hitters at a disadvantage so I would like to see if Marte improves beyond the strong numbers he has already put up and if Hinds is real prospect or a perpetual K machine

On the flip side I think we will get a much better idea of what Phillips is as a pitcher

DSL Reds tumbled 9-8. However, they did receive one strong pitching performance. Abraham Gaitan shut down the opposing hitters for 4 innings. 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. He's flashing a 1.17 ERA early in the season. Gaitan is 19-year-old righthander out of Nicaragua.

The Taiwan wunderkind, Sheng-En Lin, was activated down on the island, but did not see action today.

Jay Allen II is back in action after his 60-day stint on the IL. He is rehabbing and leading off for the ACL-Reds tonight.

Hopefully he can have a 2023 more like Rece Hinds and less like Austin Hendrick

(I know he's more speed, less power than those two, but all three were our highly drafted OF disappointments heading into this year)

DSL Reds climbed the ladder for a pair of runs in the first. Alfredo Duno (.981 OPS) singled and scored a run on a Yael Romero (1.041 OPS) double. Adrian Reyes (1.025) tripled to complete the rally. Nice 3-4-5.

DSL Reds continue to pour it on, leading 8-3 through 4 innings o play. Alfredo Duno now has two singles and a double. Yeycol Soriano yanked a 2-run shot out of the park.

Wonder if Duno gets bumped to AZL ball this summer or they keep him down there for cultural reasons? Either way exciting to see a big bonus guy raking. I know he’s only DHing this summer.

Same with Cabrera- wonder if he sees any time in Daytona before the season ends?
