WTH??? Daytona scored 13 runs this afternoon on just 6 hits. 14 walks definitely haunted.

As good as Callihan has been lately, the Reds may leave him unprotected as somebody no team is going to keep on the ML roster all season. His overall results for the year don't suggest he's anywhere near being able to handle that.

Maybe, but they have plenty of room unless they do something unexpected like offering arb to Newman and Senzel or bringing back some of their FA (Casali, Renfroe, Bader or Farmer).

They really need a LH Hitting reserve IF behind, McLain, Marte and India. Callihan is the best internal candidate. Most everyone who needs protected has already been added. Only Phillips, Hinds and Acuna are must protects in the system along with Lodolo off the 60-day IL. They'll likely Add Spiers as well. Once they clear out the FA and the deadwood like Shreve, Legumina, Kennedy, Dunn, Overton, Vlad, Hopkins... They'll have plenty of room. That would include protecting Fairchild and Martini and a spot for Votto should he return.

Calihan has had an impressive 70 PA to start his AA career, but after putting up a .684 OPS in 160 games in A+ he has a lot to prove to even sniff the MLB level next year. The Reds should be going out and signing a decent lefty hitting utility guy. I seriously doubt that all of Marte, Steer, India, and CES will be on the opening day roster. Of course that assumes Elly and McLain are locks for two of the 4 IF spots. I think it comes down to one of India or Marte getting traded. CES hasn't shown enough to bring back much, and Steer's versatility is too valuable to trade.

I agree, but they will have 5 or 6 open spots for iffy guys. I get them to 40 by protecting Spiers, Callihan, Hurtibise, TJ Hopkins, Fairchild, Martini, even Santillan who they've already DFAd. I don't think there is any risk either way. But, Callihan could be a guy who figured something out and comes fast. I'd protect him and go get a LH UI.

They just don't have that many guys who need protected. I'd protect him through Rule 5. They aren't going to sign anyone before then. They can always dfa later.

The Reds shouldn't protect guys just because they have open 40-man spots. It starts burning option years unnecessarily. The Reds should leave several spots open for outside acquisitions. Even if they don't make many trades or sign many free agents they can claim guys other teams waive.

    Then they should sign one.

They'll protect Rece Hinds, Bryce Bonnin, Christian Roa, Jacob Hurtubise, Jose Acuna, and will probably keep Myles Gayman, Andy Fisher, and maybe Free, Kravetz, and Vellojin before thinking about Callihan, IMO.

I expect Callihan to continue with the Reds org next season. If they think he’s a good candidate to be selected, they’ll protect him IMO.

He’s a third round pick, he got a $1.5 million bonus, this club doesn’t throw away bonus money too readily. Especially with the spike in his hitting late this season. They’ll give him a shot next year in the upper minors.

Always makes me a little bummed when there's no Dayton or Daytona boxes to check anymore.

I agree. I usually start looking for spring training dates around this time of year. However, I must admit it's pretty odd to still be following the big league team in September this year.
