Reds' newest stars pave way to win over Cardinals

De La Cruz’s sprint from first to home on a Steer two-run double in the seventh was another glimpse into the phenom’s ability.

He made the trip in 11.48 seconds, running through the stop sign from third-base coach J.R. House, and slid around the tag of Andrew Knizner after making it from third to home in 3.17 seconds, according to Statcast.

“I see the stop too late; I said, ‘I can’t stop, it's too late,’” De La Cruz said in English. “And when I see the catcher moving forward, I say, ‘I got it.’”

De La Cruz almost caught up to Jonathan India, who had a 90-foot head start scoring from second on the play.

“When I crossed the plate, I turned around and he was already sliding. ... He's the fastest human I've ever seen on a baseball field,” India said.

I’m not bothered much by him running past a stop sign. I’d say you don’t want it to become a habit.

But why did all hell break loose when Brandon Phillips ignored a take sign at the plate. but people tend to look the other way on ignoring a sign on the basepaths. Is it a “heat of the moment thing?”

It's interesting to me that you bring this up.

The only memorable experience I have had in this realm was ignoring take signs in high school one year. We had a coach that insisted on taking until the first strike and I like to jump on the first pitch.

Anyway, I got in trouble for that but I cannot recall anyone ever getting chastised for running stop signs and such. I don't even remember it happening really.

That's what got me asking about precedents in the first place...because ,from the look of it, Elly will be setting some new ones.

We have no clue what happens in the players' kangaroo courts. (Or even if they have them.)

We also have no clue what coaches might say after the media has gone.

Calling a kid out publicly is rarely ever a good idea. Teaching him in private is almost always more effective.

I had coaches who espoused that stupid strategy. I agree that a batter who has no strikes against him in the count should not swing at just any pitch, even one in the strike zone. However, unless you have two strikes against you, if you get a pitch you can handle, hit it. Sometimes the best pitch you will get in an at bat comes early.

I really wish they’d called him up earlier. I think they might be in first place right now. He so freaking good.

After a series of seeing the skill set of Elly vs. Walker, I'll take our 21 year old, and its not even close. On the eye test alone, MLB pipeline ranking Walker 1 and Elly 4 is laughable.

This kid is a game changer. The speed alone is enough to give defenses fits, but he can also hit balls oppo off his back foot at 109 lol.

No one has mentioned it yet (I don't think), but that slide to put the Reds up one was next level. Even had Contreras come down with the ball, EDLC was able to slide away from the tag-- and score. DeJong's throw was poor, yes. Contreras's ability to pick it was bad, absolutely. But EDLC showed a super high baseball IQ there with the slide.
