I expected the league to adjust to him and start throwing sliders insider and down, they did, but I thought he would adjust quickly. Seems like is now struggling just seeing anything. Elly takes fastball strikes down the middle and swings at offspeed stuff out of the zone.
I’m not sure why he doesn’t look for more first pitch fastballs.

I donÂ’t much buy the tired explanation either, but hand/wrist injuries can absolutely skew data to the point of being unusable. We saw the same thing with Mesoraco and India coming up. Whether or not thatÂ’s the case with Elly remains to be seen of course.
not to mention he guess at whats coming instead of using comon sense.. 2-0.. or 3-0, or 3-1,, he is getting a hitable fastball and he takes it.. i just go UGHH. as i am thinking along as a hitter..

He has Major League talent and Single-A fundamentals. He has so many things to work on. His best bet would be to go to the Arizona Fall League where he could work on one or two of them.

So here’s the question: is he a starting IF in 2024 or does he need to win the job from the likes of CES, Marte, and (by proxy) India?
CES is going to be the 1st baseman. India is going to play 2B if he’s still here. Matt McLain is going to bat 3rd for the Reds for the next six years - and will either be playing 2B or SS. You have Marte and his much-needed-in-this-lineup bat-to-ball skills lying around, as well as Spencer Steer.
I don’t think Elly can learn anything from murdering AAA pitching. Does his upside justify the opportunity cost of starting him (Barerro-style) at SS next year? On a potentially competitive team?
I say yes.

My comment is anecdotal but yes this exactly.
Many many times I’ve seen him get a fastball in the zone on the first pitch and he takes. Then behind in the count, here comes the swings and misses on breaking balls out of the zone.
Yes, you start De La Cruz at SS. You have to for a couple reasons. First, you have figure out if he can hit lefties or if his severe struggles there are are real thing. Second, you have to figure out if he can actually improve his plate discipline and, if so, to what extent. That and relocating his power, if he can, will go a long way to determining a reasonable long-term ceiling.
Oh, and they have to move India.

Edit** I’ve had my eyes on Edward Cabrera for some time. The Marlins aren’t as flush with pitching as they were at this time last year - but that’s someone I’d love to target if the price is right.
