Re: 2023 MLB News and Notes #2

    AP---

    https://apnews.com/article/milwaukee...ca427fe62e48f2

Republican legislators announced a bill Monday that would devote more than $614 million in public funding to repair and renovate the Milwaukee Brewers' stadium — far more than taxpayers spent to build it more than two decades ago.

Under the proposal, the state would give the team $60.8 million next fiscal year and up to $20 million each year after that through 2045-46. The city of Milwaukee would contribute a total of $202 million and Milwaukee County would kick in $135 million by 2050.

The team would contribute about $100 million and extend its lease at American Family Field through 2050, keeping Major League Baseball in its smallest market for another 27 years.

Rick Schlesinger, the team’s president of business operations, called the proposal a “good first step” during a separate news conference later Monday.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, a Democrat, said the proposal would put too much of a burden on the city. Since city residents are Milwaukee County residents as well, they’re being asked to pay twice, he said. He also complained that that the bill removes the mayor’s appointment to the stadium district board.

Reports commissioned by the Brewers and another by a state consultant found the stadium’s glass outfield doors, seats and concourses should be replaced, its luxury suites and technology such as its sound system and video scoreboard need upgrades, and its signature retractable roof needs repairs. Fire suppression systems, parking lots, elevators and escalators need work, too.

The proposal would have to pass the Republican-controlled state Assembly and state Senate and get Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ signature before it could become law. Evers’ office issued a statement Monday saying he looked forward to reviewing the proposal.
    .....

Baseball operations at the stadium currently generate about $19.8 million annually in state and local taxes.

    .....

Evers proposed giving the team almost $300 million in the state budget in exchange for the team extending its lease by 13 years, to 2043. Evers would have pulled the money from the state’s $7 billion surplus, but Republican lawmakers killed the plan after Vos said he wanted a longer lease extension.

    The reverse jinx works!

I can’t stand Waiwright so I hate that he got to 200 but at least it wasn’t against Cincy.

The fact that he pitched with an ERA near 8 all season long to get it, makes me not mind it.

It still is the location. It's supposed to be right next to the Dome. St. Pete itself seems to be the problem. From what I understand, if you don't live in St. Pete, it's really difficult to get there when a lot of other people are trying to do the same.

Yep, the Pinellas Peninsula in general is just a royal pain to get to if you're not already on the peninsula itself. I've flown into TPA a number of times when going out to Madiera Beach, St. Pete Beach or nearby areas, and each time I ask myself why I'm flying into TPA instead of PIE (St. Pete-Clearwater). It's just a royal pain to get from the Tampa area to the peninsula or vice versa.

Raymond James Stadium, where the Tampa Bay Bucs play, is in Tampa proper and the two stadiums are more than 20 miles apart from each other with really only two ways to get back and forth.

Lorenzen pitched a third of an inning yesterday in relief and gave up 4 runs.

Nick “Balls of Steel” Castellanos catches a foul pop up with a runner on third, tie game, bottom 9…and proceeds to nail the runner at home with a spin and throw.

    I miss him.

He's thrown 149 innings, 52 more than last year and 36 more than he's ever thrown in a season (his first year).

Cardinals put Contreras on the IL, ending his season.

I feel a whole book could be written about this guy's year. From basically being named the next Yadi when they signed him, to the club's weird decision to remove him from catching duties earlier in the season, etc.

So Wisconsin and Milwaukee would give the Brewers $800M through 2050... Brewhahas contribute only $100M for upgrades.

"It's a good first step" says the Brewers President of Baseball Operations

    That's crazy

The deal to build that stadium cost $400 million in 1996 dollars. The Brewers contributed $90 million for the stadium upfront, while the public contributed *$310 million via loans paid for via a five-county 0.10% sales tax increase (collected from 1996 through 2020).

An additional $72 million infrastructure costs were split as follows: $18 million from the City, $18 million from Milwaukee County, and $36 million from the State.

Included in the deal was a 30 year lease of ~$1 million per year to be paid by the Brewers to the Park district through the end of 2030.

*Adjusted for inflation $515 million in 2020 dollars when the tax was finally eliminated.

    -----------------------------

For Reference the Reds only paid $30 million towards GABP - Hamilton County paid for the rest with a .50% sales tax (to go towards both stadiums). The Reds, like the Brewers, owed a similar yearly rent albeit for 35 years not 30. Though the Reds rent structure is much more in their favor over the back 25 years of the lease than the Brewers.

First off I do consider Gerritt Cole somewhat of a whiny beaaaatch.

But I gotta give him some props. Just catching bits and pieces of NYY games lately he’s always in the dugout talking and teaching pitching to various pitchers on the team.

Miller Park or whatever is is called now was a palace at twice the price of GABP with a weather proof retractable dome allowing for 81 weather proof games a year in the Midwest. Great deal for the Brewers now and then.
