If you missed out on getting to see The Great American Eclipse in 2017, you get a second chance in early April of 2024. This total solar eclipse, being dubbed The Great North American Eclipse, will take place on April 8, 2024 and, for a lot of us, will mean having to drive just a few short hours to get within the band of totality. In 2017, I drove 2.5 hours into Tennessee to get to totality. Even if you have to drive six or seven hours, I would encourage you to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. The sun being 98 or 99% covered is not enough. The difference between a 98-99% darkened sun and 100% blacked out is like the difference between Luke Weaver and Tom Seaver.

I am planning on driving to Indianapolis to find my viewing spot. However, depending on the weather forecast, I may modify my route. I will travel in the direction of sunny skies, even if that takes me to Texas. I'm hoping for a sunny Indy, though. Good luck on getting a room booked somewhere within the band of totality. Most rooms have been booked for years!!!

Not for another twenty years(Aug. 23, 2044) will there be a total solar eclipse whose path will intersect the contiguous U.S. , and then you'll have to go to Montana or North Dakota to see it. The next one after that, March 30, 2052, will cross the state of Georgia.

I'm already planning my trip there. I'll stay with mom in Dayton, which should put us in totality or very near it.

I remember one from when I was in middle school in Dayton in 1984. We all got to leave class to go watch it. Or rather, look away from it as it reached almost complete blockage.

It absolutely will!!! Except it will likely be even more spectacular than the Crab explosion. It will probably even be visible in the day time. The Crab is about 6,500 LY from Earth, while the giant Red Supergiant, Betelgeuse, is only about 650 LY away. A Betelgeuse blowup would likely be the grandest astronomical event in our lifetimes---by far!!!

BETELGEUSE is already one of the brightest stars in the night sky (usually the 10th brightest) and is easily seen with the naked eye. So you can imagine what would happen when it blows. It could possibly rival the brightness of a full moon.

Betelgeuse is anywhere from 7,500 to 14,000 times brighter than the sun and is about 700 times larger than our Sun. So, it goes without saying, as a sky- watching enthusiast, I'm hoping she blows(or , more precisely, has already blown) !!!

One of my favorite asterisms is one that I can't visually see in the night sky from here North America. It's the Southern Cross. If I ever saw the Cross, I'm sure I'd understand why I came that way. I named two of my little girl cats after two of the stars in the Southern Cross. In the picture below, which was photographed from the big island in Hawaii, one of my little girls, Mimosa(Mimi) is on the left and the other , Imai(Immi) , is on the right.

Wonder if Stephen Stills named his cat after a star in the cross?

You're right, while unlikely, it's not impossible. Astronomers have been noticing some really odd things going on lately with Betelgeuse.

What quantum theory (if any) do you posit describes our universe?

I'm partial to Quantum Field Theory, as it closely resembles ideas I've had for years, but given it's impossible to test against, am wide open for others if they prove themselves.

That assumes we know how the universe will age and evolve. I’m not convinced it’ll go that way but none of us are going to be around to see who’s right so whatever

In the Vincennes IN area, they have billboards up already advertising this. I believe they are having some kind of festival or something.
