I posted this in the Tyler Stephenson thread and I think it might. be worth trying for the run for the playoffs and hopefully TySteve can bounce back next season.

As much as I love Tyler Stephenson, I think the past week or so has solidified who the Reds' best option behind the plate really is – and unfortunately, it is not Tyler Stephenson.

In limited playing time, Luke Maile is batting .252 with five home runs. His ability to frame pitches and his arm was a big reason the Reds were able to come home with a series victory in Pittsburgh.

I hate to see Stephenson struggle like he has this year. He only has three hits since July 30.

Stephenson batted .319 last season, along with .286 in 2021, and .294 in 2020. I believe he is just having a bad year and will soon be back to form, but now that the Reds are in a playoff push, it’s time for a more even split between the two catchers.

Well, I'd love to see the .296/.369/.454/.823 Ty Steve make a return.

Newman, Fairchild, Ramos, TySteve, Hopkins... I'm starting to have flashbacks to those Wil Myers /Vosler days. Did that fun just two months ago really, really happen? GO REDLEGS... Win this series for NC RED!!!!

I dare the guys at Bally Sports to use those 5 players as their Same Game Parlay promotion tonight.

One with Fraley and India hurt and going against a LHP

I don't understand why people are always shocked by lineups against LHPs

I’d play Friedl and Benson, regardless. And Maile should be catching 80% of the time now.

Friedl is the one guy on today's bench I would have in there against a lefty, but he never has managed to hit 500 AB's in his pro career so he seems to need time off anyways.

Otherwise, as noted, the Reds are short a few starters. And they honestly have decent depth despite this.

I think it has more to do with seeing Newman at the top of the lineup against every lefty. And then people will say, oh his numbers against lefties are excellent. Let's take a look at those numbers...

In the months of July and August, Newman has 25 PA against lefties.

His slash line in those two months against lefties is .143/.208/.238.

His BABIP in those two months against lefties is a paltry .188. So you might say he's been unlucky...except he hasn't.

He only has 3 balls in play with an EV over 100 MPH in those two months. And those 3 balls had launch angles of 9, -10, and 2...resulting in a single and two outs.

If you sort his top 20 EV balls this season, 19 of them occurred in April/May/June.

    April - 8

    May - 6

    June - 5

    July - 0

    August - 1

He's not hitting the ball hard, and he hasn't since June. Now, if he wants to go ahead and make me eat crow tonight, that'd be cool.

I had the same thought. Fans who attend tonight expect to see Friedl, Benson and Votto. The Cleveland pitcher is a lefty, but his off-speed stuff and breaking balls are going to make some of the hitters in this particular Reds lineup look silly. Hard to defend this lineup to paying customers. You might as well tell Ashcraft he's either going to have to throw a shutout or we lose. The Reds will probably have twice as many strikeouts — maybe three times! — as runs tonight.

I get that our manager is Mr. Platoon, but I hate this lineup.
