Are we thinking Montgomery? Nola? Hader? Snell?

How can the Reds outbid the market on enough long-term deals that they’ll end up adding $40MM to the 2024 payroll? They’re not going to sign anyone to a six-figure deal. It’s going to take four or five mediocre veterans on short-term deals to reach the threshold everyone is voting for.
The Cubs spent $110M last season. Adding $40M really doesn't make the Reds as active one would think. $40M also doesn't get you much these days.

I won't get into names, but this is how the Reds could easily add $40M this offseason.

$25M - Two (2) back of the rotation starters or one (1) top of the rotation starter.
    $10M - One (1) late inning reliever
    $5M - One (1) middle reliever

If the want to add a big bat at DH, that's easily another $15M. They need to add more than one middle reliever too, and some better bench players. That gets the Reds to adding $65-70M, or near a $100M payroll.

This would mean the Reds adding ~$40MM in payroll from outside the organization this winter.

    Two questions:

    1. What pending free agents/trade targets make sense for the Reds?

    2. What about the strategy of the FO since the work stoppage makes you believe they significantly add to their obligations this off-season?
I'd like to see the Reds sign 2 of the 3 of Montgomery, Giolito and Flaherty to bolster the rotation. Sign Chapman to be LH secondary closer. If he wasn't too expensive I'd take a look at Jeimer Candelario.

    Re: 2024 Payroll Poll

Here's the guaranteed money that's being spent and the guys who are arb eligible. Everyone else will be on minimum contracts:

    2024 Guaranteed money:

    Joey Votto $7.0 (buyout)
    Wil Myers $1.5 (buyout)
    Moose $4.0 (buyout)
    Casali $0.75 (buyout)
    Hunter $3.33

    Total: $16.58

    Arb guys

    Kevin Newman Arb 3
    Lucas Sims Arb 3
    Nick Senzel Arb 2
    Derek Law Arb 2
    Tejay Antone Arb 2
    Alex Young Arb 2
    Jonathan India Arb 1
    Ty Steve Arb 1
    Jake Fraley Arb 1

Anyone want to take a shot at arb amounts?

    Re: 2024 Payroll Poll

    I would guess
    Newman released
    Sims 2.5
    Senzel 2.5
    Law 1.5
    Antone 1
    Young 1.5
    India 2.5-3
    Stephenson 2.5
    Fraley 2.5

Should be around 15-18 depending on who they bring back. I could see them moving on from Newman, Senzel, Young, Antone, and possibly trading one of India, Ty Steve, or Fraley. It could be as low as 7 or 8 mil if they only keep Sims, Fraley, and Stephenson.

    Re: 2024 Payroll Poll

So let’s call it $15 for the arb guys and another $10 for the pre-arb guys, that puts them at roughly $40 million give or take, or about $50 below this season.

They had the highest attendance since 2015 they have a ton of money available. Hopefully they start spending.

Padres announced that they'll be reducing their payroll from 249 million to 200 million.

    Thoughts and prayers.

They get there just by not re-signing any of their free agents. But if they want to shed payroll through trades, Joe Musgrove is good target for the Reds.

I went with 51 to 75 I have a feeling the FO will decide the team needs one more year of seasoning.

    Re: 2024 Payroll Poll

Free Agent Pitchers who could be be of interest:
    Ohtani (we can dream)
    Kershaw (still dreaming)
    Aaron Nola
    Blake Snell
    Sonny Gray
    Jordan Montgomery
    Lucas Giolito
    James Paxton
    Seth Lugo
    Luis Severino

    OF Bats
    Cody Bellinger
    Teoscar Hernandez
    Gurriel Jr
    Jorge Soler
Not many intriguing OF bats, wonder if a trade could be made.

Wouldn't mind adding a player or two from these lists

    Re: 2024 Payroll Poll

I went with the 75-100 option but I think we will be in that 80-90 are TBH. I would like to see these kind of additions: (assuming Votto retires)

    1) SP- Seth Lugo fits nicely in that #4 spot giving the staff a true veteran presence. (Mid -tier FA)

    2) BP- 2 solid arms Brent Suter(LHRP), Jordan Hicks (setup)

    3) OF/DH- Adam Duvall- gives us RH power, and can play a little around the diamond (Joey Votto)

    4) Luke Maile (c)

    5) Lucas Sims (rhrp)

Vladimir Gutierrez (likely super two), and Justin Dunn are also arb eligible (nontender candidates).

Lugo is likely minimum 2 years / 12.5M per (innings increase this year could be injury marker next year)
Suter is likely 2 years / 4M per
Hicks if he's smart takes a 1 year / big$ contract to prove his abilities, could get 4-8M$ depending on who believes in him
Duvall is likely 2 years / 8.5M per
    Maile 1 year /1.5M

I mean, look at those numbers. We are really talking about peanuts in the modern MLB. The Reds can really spend if they want. But ...
