I considered that but think he’s probably moving to the bullpen

They're going to have to do better than Greene and Lodolo for a #1 and 2. Lodolo is about as big a question mark as it gets and Greene hasn't shown the consistency of a #1 yet. They have plenty of $ t go get a legit vet SP.

They'll never do it but I'd l9ve to see Lodolo become a piggyback for Connor Philips. Would be a good righty lefty combo every 5th day and could save the pen most times through.

Aguiar could be pushed to AAA quickly.

Yes. This team doesn't have a 1 or a 2. Maybe if you do the simple calculation and divide into chunks of 30, but we all know that about half the guys making starts today are guys teams would rather not give the ball to. I figure there are about 10 number 1s, 20 number 2s, another 40 or so 3s and 4s. Everybody else is somebody you'd rather not make any starts.

On the Reds staff, I consider Greene and Abbott number 3s at best. Ashcraft and Williamson probably numbers 4s. Lodolo is nothing more than a candidate at this point. The rest are minor leaguers (Phillips, Richardson) or relievers making spot starts (Spiers, Lively, Stoudt, etc.). This team needs somebody at least as good as Greene, but probably better. Let the guys at the bottom part of the rotation sort it out with performance and the losers of the competition can be depth options in long relief or at AAA, not guys to write into the plan before opening day.

The one place to not worry about having too many guys on paper is the rotation.

Counting on Lodolo as a #2 at this point seems a stretch. I have more confidence in Williamson having a good year next year than him.
School's out. What did you expect?

We disagree on the numbers you state and the dismissal of league average starters.

Without Graham Ashcraft and Brandon Williams-- two league average starters who'd be among those "teams would rather not give the ball to"-- the Reds don't sniff .500.

That said, we do agree, at least, on the Reds needing a TOR starter to front their rotation. (They won't get one, of course, because they'll cry poverty-- but they should get more good pitching if they want to compete for playoffs and pennants.)

I'm also of the opinion that they need at least one elite relief arm. Josh Hader should be available-- he'd be my first target. (And arguably, my first target overall.)

Can't wait for another 6 months of "Hunter Greene is a BOR starter, at best" talk.

I can see people making an argument that he's closer to a BOR than TOR, and with a 4.71 ERA and 4.32 FIP it's a valid argument. Greene only pitched 107 innings so far so it's doubtful he'll be able to carry a TOR SP load next year. Lodolo will probably be lucky to hit 100 inning even if he doesn't suffer his usual injury. The Reds need a dependable veteran at the front of their rotation to help stabilize the entire pitching staff.

Greene has flashed way, way better than a BOR or MOR starter. If he can harness that performance (and it looks like he will), he'll be atop the Reds' rotation for this run of greatness they're about to go on.

There's no question that he's flashed greatness, but the overall numbers are a 4.71 ERA. This team need consistency at the top of the rotation to stabilize things. Greene is still a wild card and Lodolo is a lotto ticket.

I didn't dismiss Ashcraft and Williamson. The part of my post you excluded from your quote clearly states that I think they are number 4s at this point which would put them in the top 70 starters that teams actually want to give the ball to. You frequently misquote people when making your posts.

The key to a good rotation is to limit the starts of those guys not in the top 70. This year, Luke Weaver 21 starts, Ben Lively 12 starts, Luis Cessa 6 Starts, Brett Kennedy 2 starts, Lyon Richardson 4 starts, Connor Overton 3 starts, Levi Stoudt 2 starts, That's 50 starts from guys who don't belong starting major league games. Plenty of room to add another starter who at best would make 32 starts.

I think we agree on the needs. They need a late inning reliever better than the Sims, Gibaut middle reliever level and they need a frontline starter (not necessarily a number 1) who is better than the back of the rotation dreck that makes about 50% of the big league starts.

I don't misquote you, mth. You're just wrong and trying to move goalposts.

Neither Ashcraft nor Williamson were among the top half of would-be starters for either the Reds or in the league when the season began.

They might be now-- but they weren't.

They were just as questionable as the rest of the guys you mentioned at the beginning of the season. (In Williamson's case, perhaps moreso.)
