2023-24 MLB Off-Season News and Notes

    Latest on Mets' manager search:
Craig Counsell says he's 'not going to ignore' interested teams

Brewers manager Craig Counsell, whose contract in Milwaukee expires after the season, is doing nothing to quiet the buzz that has connected him to the Mets' manager job -- and a potential reunion with David Stearns.

"I’m not under contract, so if other people ask, I’m not going to ignore it," Counsell told Tyler Kepner of The Athletic.

David Stearns explained what he's looking for as he searches for a manager to replace Buck Showalter.

"Someone who is working side by side with me and the rest of our baseball ops group Stearns said.

Phil Nevin will not return as Angels manager in 2024

The Angels will not be retaining Phil Nevin as manager after declining his option for the 2024 season, the club announced on Monday.

General manager Perry Minasian, who signed a four-year deal before the 2021 season, is set to host an availability with the media on Tuesday. There could be other changes to the coaching staff as well, but Minasian’s job appears safe.

The Angels will begin their search for a new manager immediately and will be making their fourth managerial hire since 2019.

Brad Ausmus served as manager for one season in ‘19 before Maddon was hired in 2020.

It’ll be the fifth skipper in seven seasons for the Angels, who previously had stability with Mike Scioscia at the helm from 2000-2018.

Lorenzen not on NL Wild Card roster as Phils opt for extra RH bat

The team announced its 26-man roster on Tuesday morning before Game 1 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Right-hander Michael Lorenzen did not make the roster.

Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in his second start for the Phillies on Aug. 9, following his arrival from Detroit on Aug. 1. But Lorenzen had a 7.96 ERA in his next five starts before the Phillies moved him to the bullpen.

Lorenzen struggled in his first relief appearance, but threw a combined four scoreless innings in his final three.

They could have activated him as a RH bat.

I was watching a little of the Tampa game yesterday and saw Devil Rays on their uniforms. Are they back to being called that? I knew they went away from that and were just the Rays.

Would really suck to have 12 hits and 4 walks...yet only produce 3 runs in a game started by your best pitcher. Your best starting pitcher who ends up only going 4 innings and giving up 4 runs. And then you bring in your best reliever who absolutely dominated the Reds all season long, only to see him give up 3 walks and 2 runs in less than an inning.

    Baseball.

    Throw back uniforms.

Only 19000 in the park for a playoff game, bad uniforms bad market.

Thank you. That's terrible. I don't why MLB is keeping that franchise in place. Montreal would be a better place than Tampa.

Rays' home playoff crowd is MLB's smallest since 1919

The Tampa Bay Rays' home playoff game against the Texas Rangers in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Tuesday attracted just 19,704 fans -- the fewest for a major league postseason game since 1919 (excluding COVID-affected contests).

Game 7 of the 1919 World Series, a best-of-nine set featuring the Chicago White Sox and the Reds, was seen in person by just 13,923 people in Cincinnati. That series is infamous for the "Black Sox Scandal," in which eight members of the White Sox team were banned from baseball for allegedly trying to throw games.

The Reds won that series in eight games

And they plan on building the new stadium in the same spot as the Trop, right? Just doesn't make any sense at all.

What's the reason for putting Winker on the postseason roster? He hasn't had a major league AB for months after going on the IL. Plus, it's not like he was doing great before that.

And he didn't look healthy during his brief appearance last night, striking out quickly. One of the Brewers beat writers pointed out that it looked like he was in pain.

    Just a weird move.
