Never heard of this guy but I'm here to learn new things. This song and rendition is great:

It sure doesn't sound like punk. I'd never heard the song before. I will say I'm not a fan of his singing voice but our greatest American songwriter (Bob Dylan) has a horrible voice too

Dylan's voice lends itself to authenticity- he sounds like the people he sings about....makes the song hit harder.

The Pogues were so cool- not many "hits," but a song like "Tuesday Morning" is impossible not to hum along to- though I dont think Shane sang on that.

    Absolute genius.

Also probably lived 25 years longer than anyone ever would have guessed. Mr. McGowan lived hard.

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash was a favorite recording, and a pair of brown eyes the best song on it. A timeless recording that could have been performed 200 years ago or 100 years hence. The chorus was “And a rovin, a rovin, a rovin I'll go For a pair of brown eyes”
What intensity and raw human emotion in his singing.

Agreed about the album and the song. Great stuff.

This one hurts, although I admit it was amazing Shane was even alive after the years of abuse. With Billy Bragg, his music was always in the background in my college years.

    "I could've been someone."
    "Well, so could anyone."

What attracted me to the Pogues was that he brought a punk mindset to a traditional art form and also portrayed the experience of the Irish diaspora. Some of his best stuff is about struggling outside Ireland.

    Re: RIP SHane McGowan

Just remembered that Shane sang one solo line on the Nick Cave recording of Bobby Dylan’s “death is not the end” - the line was “when you’re standing at the crossroad that you cannot comprehend, just remember that death is not the end”
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao0lyPjYQw0

An excellent cover. Different message than Dylan’s version: When it’s your time, hope you can make the journey with like minded friends.

So drunk to hell I left the place
    Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
