Elly De La Cruz Is Ready To Play Wherever Reds Need Him In 2024

Elly De La Cruz is ready to play wherever the Reds need him in 2024

Instead of focusing on the slump that he went through at the end of last season or what his 2024 season will look like, De La Cruz is working on staying further back in the batter’s box. He’s training to develop better pitch recognition, to be more consistent in the cat-and-mouse game with the pitcher and to improve his plan at the plate.

“Wherever the team needs me, that’s where I’m going to play,” De La Cruz said via interpreter Jorge Merlos. “I’m going out there to win as many games as possible. Whatever way they need me, I’m going to do that.”

“For me, it doesn’t matter where I play,” De La Cruz said. “I just want to play. I’m going to have fun wherever I am. I just want to play as much as possible.”

Wonder what the Reds have to say about it? We'll find out in spring!

Wherever the Reds need him? How about at a used Ford pickup truck dealer and a facial hair growth doctor’s office? If he does that, I might consider rooting for him.

I wouldn't mind seeing him get a looksie at CF in TC. His speed, arm, and range could play well out there. But not a really long look, not this year at least. I would prefer they play him at SS and occasionally 3B, where he is most comfortable defensively, as I want his focus this year to be on plate discipline. But getting a short look early TC couldn't hurt, and if he shows some feel for the position, you can use him there in a pinch or in an emergency in-season. Then go into NEXT season's TC and give him a longer look there, with a possible move there permanently if he shows he can handle it, allowing for another INF prospect (or FA acquisition) to play SS/3B, provided they earn the opportunity.

But all this hinges on him being able to take the next step at the dish. I don't want the guy learning CF in a TC, preparing for the season, while he's still working on his bat. 6'4", FAST, rocket arm..am I crazy imagining him out there?

Well, I'm looking for more selfish behavior myself from guys next year and I'm not seeing anything here that piques my interest or curiosity.

    3B Marte...maybe

Elly....start him in AAA to improve his bat. He really hurt the Reds the last 2 months....and was getting worse not better. But he'll pencil in there on opening day lineup...and if he's improved then fine, but I'd at least be open to the idea he may not be totaslly ready for this.

Not sure I understand what TC is?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

So bummed we have to go through this again.

What exactly will he learn against AAA pitching? Elly proved he could dominate in 186 ABs last season.

He needs to work on his pitch recognition all offseason, spring training, and throughout the season. He should do this as a big-leaguer on the Reds.

Finally, there are numerous ways a player can influence a game. Just because Elly doesn't have the bat control of Pete Rose doesn't mean he can't be useful. He has otherworldly talents on the base paths and out in the field. His power is incredible.

We all would love to see Elly make more contact, take more walks, so that he can use all of these talents. But he needs to work things out with the Reds, not in Louisville.

I think a Marte-EDLC-McLain-CES infield has a chance to be really good defensively if EDLC develops more at SS.

He'd win a GG in RF, though, and I get the temptation to try him in CF.

That is not a surprising response from him. At the very least De La Cruz has consistently projected the right attitude about being a team player. He could put up Billy Hamilton-like highlights in the outfield, but I think 100% of his off-season needs to involve learning how to close the holes in his strike zone and to recognize the down and in breaking balls because all things considered, at this point his offense is the most important part of his game.

Maybe there’s more to what he said, regarding his willingness to play anywhere. I do like that he’s willing to do whatever is best for the team. That says a lot about the young man

Looking at pictures/videos at Redsfest, EDLC has a chance to be 1B to Burrow's 1A in Cincinnati sports popularity.

Cruz goes all out, all the time. If he could stay injury free doing so in CF, I might give him a look there too.
