    Re: #2 Pick

Condon has some redish flags IMO. His chase rate is in the mid 20's, half his BB are intentional, and he struggled on the Cape last year. I want to see how he looks in post season play, and see if those chase rates creep up over 30% to close the year. IMO the two safest bats in this draft are Bazzana and Kurtz.

A&M might be the best offense in the country. LaViolette would be a top 10 pick in this year's draft and Montgomery certainly will be. Still weary about taking a pitcher, but if they did Smith is the pick.

Hagen Smith has now faced 3 projected top 10 picks in the upcoming draft. (In one mock, Bazz, Cags and Mont all went top 5.)

    Bazzana. 0-3, 3 K's.
Caglianone. 0-3, fly out to CF, 2 ground ball outs to 3B. (Cags is a lefty.)
    Montgomery. 0-3, 3 K's.

I'd love to see him pitch vs Georgia in the SEC tourney, and vs Wake in the CWS-- to see how he does vs Condon and Kurtz.

I really like him, but I understand the reliever risk associated with him and his past TJ surgery.... but there is something about him though..... he's got the "it" factor. He is embarrassing the other top hitters in the draft. When he's on, he is dominant. The walk rate is a touch too high at 3.7/9 if we want to nitpick-- but it is valid.

But I'm a sucker for quality LH starting pitchers.

EDIT** JCM11 mentioned LaViolette-- and he was 1-3 with 2 K's vs Smith. Like he said-- he's a top 10 pick in this draft and I've seen him on the short list to go #1 overall next year.

That would be quite a shocker, no? How quickly do the experts expect him to move through the minors?

Burns vs NC State -- 7 IP, 5 hits, 1 run (unearned), 0 BB, 13 K. NC State is ranked 17th. Ho hum.

Joe Doyle, who is one of the most hardworking evaluators in the draft cycle, thinks both Burns and Smith are front of the rotation type arms.

Don't want to forget JJ Wetherholt, who many thought was the best hitter coming into this college season. He's been out with a hamstring injury for much of the year but is back -- and playing SS -- and hit 2 homers against TCU last night. Now hitting .387 with an OPS over 1.200.

Wetherholt gives me Matt McLain vibes. Very good pop, good bat to ball skills, willing to take a walk. Buzzana has shown more as a collegian and in the Cape Cod, but that doesn't make Wetherholt a poor prospect at all.

Smith reminds me of Lodolo-- and that turned out pretty good too.

I think Smith could pitch out of an MLB bullpen right now. If I were the team that drafts him I'd be shooting for a Paul Skenes timeline where you give him just enough time in AAA for an extra year of control and waste as few of his innings as possible in the minors. For a team that plans on contending(like hopefully the Reds in 2025) I'd give him a chance to make the opening day rotation.

Bazzana is easily the best of the two. Cleveland will take him.

Bazzana is better than Jacoby Ellsbury, Michael Conforto, Adley Rutschman, Steven Kwan and Nick Madrigal.

Right now, Bazzana is better than half of the players currently on the REDS' Major League ballclub. He could skip all of Minor League baseball as he's already major-league ready.

Not even Friedl has Bazzana's IQ.

Today, Bazzana could start for the REDS.

He's really special. Those 17 K's he did vs Oregon State at the beginning of the season (Oregon State still almost won the game, losing 5-4) were incredible.

    - - - Updated - - -

The bottom-line is that the REDS are going to get someone who will be in the majors very fast, Bazzana likely sooner than Condon.

I'd hate to lose out on Smith when he's there for the pick.
