This younger generation isn't going to make it to old age (and lose ther sanity in the process) if they hang on every loss, strain at a gnat, as if it's a sign of the end.

We're only a little more then halfway through April. The season just started. 18 games. And we're 9-9, .500.

But then, it's like this every season.

By that reasoning the 75 Reds were hanging on by a thread with 5-6 record on April 18th.

On Friday, May 18th, the 75 Reds were 18-19 and 5.5 games out of first place. On April 18th, the 2012 Reds were 4-8 and 5 games out. The 95 Reds started 1-8 and didn't reach .500 until May 19th.

In 19 diggity 03, The Cincinnata Red Stockers started out 0-37, and they ended up curing world hunger.

So I really don't see the point in critiquing where the 2024 Cincinnati Reds are at right now, unless they are criticisms such as:

"Why haven't the Reds started printing playoff tickets yet?"

"What are some good materials to buy, if I want to setup an Elly De La Cruz shrine in my hallway?"

Anything besides that though, I think they have to ask themselves why are they even Reds fans?
I believe there is a special place in hell for people that buy entities that others "root for" and treat it like any other regular business from a profit/loss standpoint.

May 19, 1975: Reds had the day off.
May 20, 1975: Pete plays his first full game at 3b, with Foster taking over permanently in left.

They're not quite the same caliber, but getting Friedl and Marte back will help a lot.

Most seasons the Reds are significantly worse than 9-9 at this point

Yet another strawman from you, aren't you always posting about how strawman arguments are the worst?

Anyways, I think folks are just saying "chill, its April 18th" - not "your opinion is invalid"

To your point, aren't you saying their opinion that "its early" is invalid by making fun of them for saying so? Seems hypocrtical.
What would you say.....ya do here?

I think it was 2018 when the Reds got off to a 3-18 start and the season was over by the end of April. Makes for a bad summer of Reds baseball.

That's what I would call hanging on by a slender thread.

4-18 on 4/23, and EVERYONE knew that the season was a wash, because every year is a piece of data and the data says that teams that are 4-18 are not good. Now if some people want to build a shrine to not using data that is their business, but I would not expect those who look at data to be quiet about that shrine. I picked the Reds to win 83 or 84 games myself, so if they are 9-9 and have 95-85 RD I'd say they are pretty much doing what I expected so far.

The Cardinals are worse than the Reds. I wonder if reds fans consider them hanging by a thread?

With the injuries to Friedl and McLain alongside Marte being an idiot my expectations for this year have been tempered, however it is April 17th, we are like 3 weeks into the 6 month long season lol.

Before Bob chimes in with meta commentary on message board posting, I’m not saying folks can’t say whatever - I’ve said quite a few hot takes myself, but to say the team is hanging by a thread or cooked or whatever on April 17th is just silly.
Absolutely 100% agree with this. I would think that people would be happy/thankful that we are even at .500 with as many bad years us Reds fans have had in the last few decades. There have been many seasons where, at the 11% mark we are already 10 games under .500 and playing for nothing. Appreciate what you have!

I understand that with all the years of losing, that .500 baseball is a victory, especially to younger fans who haven’t witnessed much success. Regardless, some people strive for excellence and aren’t content with mediocrity. Neither way of thinking is inherently wrong. Go Reds!

It's because saying things like "it's early" are:

a: conversation killers. Of course it's early. Of course it's a small sample size. Should they close down the message boards until it's no longer "early"? Ahh but then it will be "late." And no point in "beating a dead horse" at that point. What's done is done.

    and

b: it's really just a dog whistle for "I disagree but I don't want to talk about it, so no one else should either."

    Strawman, this is not.

    oh, and c:

BZ agrees with you. That alone should set off red flags for you.
