    Noelvi Marte

Reds third baseman Noelvi Marte's vision for the style of player he wants to become
Last year, Cincinnati Reds third baseman Noelvi Marte arrived at spring training looking like a slugger. He had a big frame, big muscles and the look of a hitter who’d crush 30 home runs a season.

Then when he got called up in August, Marte looked completely different. He had slimmed down, his sprint speed was elite and his biggest strengths as a hitter were his polish and approach.

In 35 big league games last year, Marte hit .316 with a .822 OPS, and he was arguably the Reds’ most consistent hitter down the stretch.

Marte’s transformation over the course of the season was a reminder of his youth and his potential.
He’s still only 22 years old, and he can be whatever style of player that he wants to be.

During his six weeks in the big leagues last year, Marte did a little bit of everything. He took a few swings that showed his raw power and exit velocities could be as good as anyone’s.

Unlike a lot of rookies, Marte showed patience at the plate and didn’t chase many pitches and he made impressive plays in the infield during his entire stretch in MLB.

Poised for big things, Marte sees silver lining in offseason injury
Reds third baseman and top prospect, Noelvi Marte, tried to turn the lemon of an offseason injury into a lemonade of better preparation going forward.

Marte was doing what many young players from the Dominican Republic often do by playing winter ball in his home country.

But he lasted only four games for the Cibao Gigantes before a strained right hamstring forced him to shut down from playing.

Reds manager David Bell has targeted Marte's debut in Cactus League games for March 2 vs. the Rockies, and the club expects him to be ready for Opening Day.

“I feel really good," Marte said. "I’m really happy with the work we’ve been able to do the past couple of weeks. We have a couple of days of treatment left to do, but we’ll be ready when the time comes to get out there.”

Marte, who started 31 of the Reds' final 39 games of the season, impressed quickly, batting .316 with an .822 OPS in 35 games. Despite having good power, he hit only three home runs.

“My mentality when I came up to the plate last year was, ‘I’m not here just to hit home runs or show off my power. I’m trying to get guys in that are in scoring position,’" Marte said. "I was trying to find ways to get the guys home and just help the team win any way possible.”

Marte finished the season with a 22-game on-base streak that started Aug. 30. Beginning Sept. 5, he also enjoyed a 16-game hitting streak through the end of the season. It was the longest rookie hitting streak for Cincinnati since Benny Zientara hit in 16 straight games from Sept. 10-22, 1946.

Reds Top Prospect Scheduled to Make Spring Debut
One of the top Reds prospects is set to return to action on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies.

Noelvi Marte has been battling a hamstring injury that has kept him from competing, but he's scheduled to play on Saturday against the Rockies.

Marte is currently the No. 1 Reds prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is the expected opening-day starter at third base.

Top prospect Marte 'comfortable' in Cactus League debut
As far as third baseman Noelvi Marte was concerned, a slightly delayed spring debut isn't going to stop him from being ready for the Reds on Opening Day.

Marte hit the ball hard in his two at-bats during his first game of the spring.

"Very comfortable out there. I’ve been looking forward to this day for a couple months now. I’m glad to be out there," Marte said via translator Jorge Merlos. "That’ll give me enough time to get out there and be ready by Opening Day."

In the top of the first inning, Marte smoked a ball to the left side that was caught by third baseman Ryan McMahon. In the fourth inning, Marte hit a hard single into center field.

"I went out there trying to make hard contact," Marte said. "I had a lot of passion with it too."

Reds manager David Bell lifted Marte before the bottom of the fourth.

“It was good to have Marte back, he looked good," Bell said. "We didn’t want to do anything crazy on the bases, but he was 100 percent. He’s completely freed up to play his normal game next time out.”

Marte and CES are two guys I'm most optimistic about. Hope they don't get benched too much.

Is being part of a rotation that ensures everyone gets regular days off "get[ting] benched?"

Yes. They should get 150 starts each (which is still 2 days off per month in addition to scheduled off days and rest they will get rotating through the DH spot with Candelario) if they are healthy. I'm guessing they'll be closer to around 125 so lesser players can get some PAs. Same will be true of EDLC and McLain though they'll need a few more off days since they probably won't "rest" in the DH spot.

This isn't T-Ball. Play the best players.

Who is in the best position to understand who and who not to play? Know-nothings like you and me, or Reds management like Bell and Krall?

Judging from Bell's comments, you and me.

I guess we should probably just shut down the message board since the Reds clearly know best in all things, and that's why they've been so successful the last 30 years.

There are no T-Ball players on a major league roster. Pretending these are 'scrubs' is just Facebooky.

Never said they were scrubs. But there is clearly a differentiation between players. The ones who are better should get the most playing time, not some cockamamie rotation system like they have in little league.

If guessing, I’d expect Marte and CES to lose a fair number of games to the “rotation” system. Can’t quantify it, but more than some of the others. Especially against RHP.

There are 45 million guaranteed reasons for this - Candy will get priority. And Candy can’t be tucked away at DH too often. Reds have three corner outfielders capable of starting against RHP, Fraley, Benson and Steer. To get them in the game against RHP, one of them (can vary) will be DHing fairly often.

If India plays corner infield some, that too could reduce the PT of Marte and CES.

Injuries may balance things out. Also, Marte could get some middle infield time to boost his PT. Against LHP, I’d expect Marte and CES to be in the lineup a high percentage of the games.

In none of these situations is Marte or CES being replaced to a worse player, especially when you factor in matchups.

If Marte and/or CES go on a tear and start producing like McLain did last year, I am certain that they will be get more playing time.

I don’t disagree. But as emerging players, Reds shouldn’t keep these young starters, eg Marte, CES, on the bench too much. Sitting on the bench often isn’t necessarily the best training.

It’s a balance - the best lineup for today v the best lineup for player development. Reds hopefully will navigate this well.
