    Re: Reds TV Options

I will place this here for future searches

I have had great luck using MLB.TV yearly subscription (I think T Mobile gives this away free) plus a $7 per month subscription to Unlocator Smart DNS to get around all the blackout rules. I watch all the games through my Apple TV's.

Even my 80+ year old father does the same thing. Unlocator has a bunch of easy to follow shot screenshots on how to configure the DNS on your apple tv, roku, computer, etc.. The only thing is doesnt work on is my iphone, as that has constant location awareness that cannot be subverted.

Both my dad and I have done this for three years now, ever since we dropped DirecTV and switched to YouTubeTV.

This is also what I have done the last few years, except I use Nord for my VPN! The last couple years I waited until Memorial Day when MLB has special pricing. This year I purchased MLB because of the anticipation of the Reds chances-silly me!

But what is MLB's reasoning for utilizing these various remote broadcast streams? Throw a game out there for fans to watch who otherwise can't? LOL

I'm assuming because of all this crap going on with Bally, etc, there is no binding braodcast contract MLB has to honor presently? So they can throw games to Peacock, Roku, etc?

It's easy to find good weed, but it's hard to find Reds game on TV.

That's a separate issue. The contracts with Ballys and the other RSNs are done by each team and a lot of those deals are up in the air due to the bankruptcy. The Peacock, Apple, Roku, Amazon, etc. are through MLB much like ESPN or Fox (the main Fox, not the RSNs.)

    Re: Reds TV Options

This is just me sharing how baffling the mlb.tv blackout rules are. I've watched MLB games via mlb.tv for around 10 years now, ever since I cut the chord on my old Direct TV contract and pledged that I wouldn't go that route again. In those ten years, all with the same home internet provider, I was used to(but not at all happy with) the fact that I could not watch Reds games live, and normally the games would not even be available for replay for several hours after the completion of the game. I was only able to watch replays of Reds games on the same day it was played if the Reds had played in the afternoon. All other 29 teams were available to me live and immediately after completion for replay. I've assumed for those 10 years that this was just the way I'd have to accept watching MLB games. I tend to watch just as many games on MiLB.tv anyway and they are all live. So recently I made the decision to finally move on from my really poor home internet service and switch to Starlink(yes I'm in a rural area with very limited choices for internet). Now on Starlink I still cannot view Reds games live, but now I also cannot watch the White Sox or Cubs. All teams, including the Reds are now available for replay immediately after the completion of the games. So obviously the Starlink is somehow putting me in a different zone that makes Chicago and Cincinnati seem like they are local to me, which is odd. I am in Indiana, but the Louisville, Ky metro area. I don't give two craps about the Cubs or White Sox, but still strange that they are blacked out. I'm taking solace in the fact that I can watch replays right away, and of course the Starlink is 20x faster than my previous internet, so streaming is seamless now.

Just found this entire situation very odd.

No one can figure out MLB black outs. They are outdated and non sensical. This needs to be overhauled and quite honestly done away with. But I'm afraid that will never happen.

Absolutely. The larger issue are the deals these teams made with the RSNs. Back around the turn of the century, teams were getting these sweet, sweet cable deals from the RSNs for a lot of years. There were no streaming services. Netflix and Amazon were just starting and the former was just a movie rental service. By the time streaming became a thing these teams were still locked into these RSN contracts. Not only that but a lot of teams - including the Reds - had a piece of their respective RSN. Cable and Satellite companies are taking it on the chin mainly because of streaming. With the parent company of the RSNs filing for bankruptcy there may be a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel. But it might take a while. I think once the bankruptcy is resolved and teams are free to make new deals, the blackout policy could be revised.
