    2024 Reds Injury Updates

Jonathan India progressing from foot injury

Reds manager David Bell said Jonathan India will start playing in spring training games around March 7 or 8.

India's plantar fasciitis tore during the offseason, which prevented him from needing surgery.

He can't re-injure it, but he can experience aggravation, and he's building back up through a progression.

Reds Injury Updates: The Latest on Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcraft

We know exactly when Graham Ashcraft will make his spring debut and we have a range of time for Nick Lodolo.

Lodolo said that he is feeling well and hasn't had any setbacks. He told Jim Day that he expects to get into a game in the next week.

Ashcraft gave an exact day, revealing he will pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Shohei Ohtani on Thursday, Feb. 29. He has been working his way back from offseason surgery on his right big toe.

Lodolo added that his road back to the mound has been slower than he would have liked, but doesn't believe his regular season availability has been negatively affected.

Light swinging next if McLain (oblique) progresses

    2B Matt McLain (right oblique)
    Expected return: TBD
McLain has been doing mostly core work and working out with a medicine ball in recent days. If things progress well, manager David Bell said, the infielder will transition into some light swinging. “Not quite there yet, but going well,” Bell said.

On Feb. 19, McLain had an MRI as a precaution after feeling sore from taking a lot of batting practice swings. Results were negative for another strain like the one that cost him the final month of the 2023 season on the injured list, but the club is being extra cautious to protect him. Nick Lodolo might learn by Friday if he’ll open season on time
Nick Lodolo, who has been on a slower, monitored throwing program this spring coming off last year’s leg injury, faces a key evaluation crossroads Friday that may determine whether he’ll be ready to open the season on time.

Lodolo, who hasn’t been scheduled to start a Cactus League game yet, was to throw a second live batting practice session Thursday, after which he was to be evaluated Friday for a possible next step in his progression, possibly even a spring debut.

“We’ll see how (Thursday) goes and then we’re going to meet,” manager David Bell said. “If it goes well, he’s going to be in good shape.

    More injury updates

Reds infielder Jonathan India (foot) isn’t expected to play in a spring training game until next week. but Bell said that India isn’t at risk of re-injuring his plantar fascia.

India is going through a build up progression and continues to make positive progress to build up “tolerance” in his foot. “If he doesn’t have any setbacks, he’ll be ready for Opening Day,” Bell said. “Part of the reason we’re being conservative is so we don’t have any setbacks.”

Relievers Emilio Pagán (sports hernia), Sam Moll (shoulder) and Alex Young (back) are all scheduled to throw bullpens and are gearing up toward making their spring training game debuts.

Bell said that Matt McLain (oblique) got a clean bill of health when he got checked out recently and will begin light throwing and fielding. McLain’s next step is to start swinging.

Graham Ashcraft makes 1st start since toe surgery.Ashcraft returns to the mound on Thursday night (8 p.m. MLB Network) for a spring training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers

    Re: 2024 Reds Injury Updates

Healthy Ashcraft, Lodolo could make rotation battle even tighter
In two different ways, Thursday was a pivotal day for what could be the makeup of the Reds starting rotation that will begin the regular season. All Graham Ashcraft and Nick Lodolo had to show, really, was that they were healthy.

Their results were promising. Ashcraft, who is coming back from September foot surgery, faced the Dodgers for his Cactus League debut. In a 5-4 Reds win, he pitched two scoreless and hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts while throwing 21 pitches.

"The foot is the best it’s felt yet," Ashcraft said.

About an hour before Ashcraft took the mound at Goodyear Ballpark, Lodolo was wrapping up facing hitters on a practice field in live batting practice. While throwing 25 pitches over six at-bats, he faced Noelvi Marte and Jonathan India twice, plus Will Benson and Blake Dunn.

"Disgusting," India said of Lodolo's stuff.

“It felt good. I think we hit that progression, at least for now," Lodolo said. "I’ll see how I feel in the morning when I get here and everything, and we’ll figure out the next step from here.”

    Matt McLain
    2B Matt McLain (right oblique)
    Expected return: TBD
McLain took ground balls and was scheduled to do some light swinging on Feb. 29 after passing a series of tests that showed he’s no longer dealing with the soreness issue. The plan is also for McLain to work with pilates and mobility coach Robyn Cohen in becoming more flexible in his core area.

On Feb. 19, McLain had an MRI as a precaution after feeling sore from taking a lot of batting practice swings. Results were negative for another strain like the one that cost him the final month of the 2023 season on the injured list, but the club is being extra cautious to protect him. Re: 2024 Reds Injury Updates

    LHP Nick Lodolo (left tibia)
    Expected return: TBD
Although Lodolo felt no pain while throwing his second live batting practice session to hitters on Feb. 29, manager David Bell said the following day that the lefty’s leg “recovery is not perfect yet."

Lodolo and the club met with a doctor, and he is being scheduled to undergo a bone scan. If nothing is found to be wrong, Lodolo could still have a chance to be ready for Opening Day. If not, it casts doubt on his ability to open the regular season on time.

"No major concern, but we want to make sure we’re going in the right direction because he has been dealing with this for so long,” Bell said. “Once we have all of that information, hopefully he stays right on track. Early next week, we’ll know for sure.”
    RHP Ian Gibaut (right forearm)
    Targeted return: TBD
Gibaut was supposed to be shut down from throwing for 3-5 days after a Feb. 23 MRI revealed a pronator strain his right forearm. However, five days have come and gone without throwing. That likely puts the right-hander’s readiness for Opening Day in doubt.

“He’s not quite ready yet. No setbacks or anything, but we’re just trying to get all the soreness out of there,” manager David Bell said. (Last updated: March 1)

If Lodolo is feeling no pain, what are they looking for?
    Where we gonna go?

He doesn't feel any pain while he's pitching but his leg is sore the day after pitching.

Sounds like Lodolo has a bad case of Senzelitis.

Expecting consistent, long-term performance from Lodolo appears to be on par with searching for Fool's Gold.

My understanding is that an early "stress reaction" won't show up on an x-ray but the bone scan will. So this will definitively reveal soreness or a setback

Matt McLain took 70 swings and some ground balls on March 1, manager David Bell said.
He is expected to face pitchers in live batting practice in the middle of next week if all continues without setbacks. There is not a target date for getting him into exhibition games but Bell expects it not to be much longer after the live BP if all goes well. (Last updated: March 2)

I always just assumed all of the pitchers were sore the day after pitching.
