I'm not arguing for Kemp or Harrison over India. If that's all they have, India is it. My problem is that they put themselves in this position in the first place. They had all winter to fix the roster and there were several cheap free agents who aren't washed up that were available.
    Except they didn't.

As a result, they have McLain, India, Steer, Kemp, Harrison, etc.

Steer is a better option as a 2B than Kemp, Harrison, and others-- even with his putrid glove.

Not sure I see a qualitative difference between the names you mentioned and the players the Reds signed. Solano is the only standout there, and I wanted the Reds to sign him if they traded India.

If you are looking for a MI glove, 36 year old Solano doesn't provide much more than what is on the roster. Rosario and Anderson may be the Rays and Marlins starting SSs, respectively. They didn't sign for much but the Reds could not offer a role anywhere close to that

Might have dodged a bullet. Sony gray headed for a MRI

Thankfully they didn't sign Tim Anderson. He was one of the worst starters in baseball last year for position players

Why even kvetch about Steer playing 2b and then float signing 36-year-old Solano to play 2b? Seems mismatched

LHP Nick Lodolo (left tibia discomfort)
    Expected return: TBD
Lodolo threw a 30-pitch live batting practice session on March 6, facing Reds infielders Jonathan India and Matt McLain. Reds manager David Bell said the team would review the results of Lodolo’s visit earlier in the week with a specialist before providing an official update on his status, which will likely dictate his availability for Opening Day. Lodolo seemed confident in the trajectory of his progression after his live BP. Lodolo was limited to seven starts last season because of a stress fracture in the tibia. (Last updated: March 6)
2B Matt McLain (right oblique strain)
    Expected return: TBD
McLain took 70 swings and some ground balls on March 1, manager David Bell said. He faced teammate Nick Lodolo in live batting practice on March 6. There is not a target date for getting him into exhibition games, but Bell expects it not to be much longer after the live BP, if all goes well. (Last updated: March 6)
INF Jonathan India (left foot plantar fasciitis)
    Targeted return: March 8
Manager David Bell said that India has remained on a modified running plan after a flare-up of the plantar fasciitis issue that caused him to miss 39 games last season. Bell believed that India has plenty of time to be ready for Opening Day and can take extra at-bats without running the bases. Not playing him in games has allowed the club to control his workload. You want to die on the same hill that you did in 2019 when the Reds traded for Sonny Gray and gave up Shed Long Jr and a Comp Pick. You spent a lot of time disagreeing with that move vehemently. Besides the reasons stated previously. Why would the Reds want to sign any of those players when they have better in house options.

Because the "better in house option" can't play the position where he's most needed and, since he was good 3 years ago, he's going to get full time duty while better players they have now sit. Rather than juggling a bunch of guys so the player who lost his job can play more often than the guys who beat him out for that job, why not get a true reserve player who has the exact skillset the role calls for?

If the plan for the "better player" was for him to play 30 or so times at 2nd base while McLain and EDLC rest and sit the rest of the time, I'd be OK with it. Instead he going to start in the OF about 50 times and probably another 40 or 50 times at 1B/3B/DH and the guys who should be starting will sit more often as a result of it.
