The grind gets a lot of guys. It’s not his arm, but his body in general doesn’t seem able to withstand the repetition

Cincinnati Reds LHP Nick Lodolo to IL for groin strain in latest blow to struggling team

Another day, another body blow for the Cincinnati Reds.

Left-hander Nick Lodolo, perhaps the team's best pitcher, joined TJ Friedl and a host of other key players on the injured list Wednesday, when the Reds put him on the 15-day IL because of a groin strain.

The move is retroactive to May 12, the day after he pitched six innings in San Francisco.

Lodolo gave up a first-inning grand slam in that game and then retired the next eight batters and 16 of the final 19 he faced.

He has a 3.34 ERA in six starts since returning from a leg injury that sidelined him for nearly a year.

If this was roster manipulation, It does seem as if they would have waited until after the LA series. Not only is that a big start, but Williamson might have been closer to slotting in as well….. then again, maybe the rest was needed now. At least I hope it’s just a rest situation, rather than a real groin injury.

Maybe he just strained his groin.

But why rest Lodolo now - which means he can’t make his start in LA coming up in two days? If this was some kind of manipulation - as your post suggests - the timing seems exquisitely bad. Nick is now out of that start and the next one, at minimum.

He's had leg issues, his leg is actually pretty long too... if it's tweak then sit for a week!

Donít forget Lodolo has barely pitched last 12 months.
If it was they would have put him on the IL immediately to get the reliever up sooner.

You get 28-30 starts per year from a guy, if you’re lucky.

I find it hard to believe a struggling team would voluntarily sacrifice 2 of them, from one of its top two starters. Who is already exceptionally injury prone.

He didn’t pitch last year, he was never going to pitch even 20 starts this year.

Has six now, 120 games left in the season.

Needs to make a start every 8.5 games to get to 20 in four and half months.

You think that's not going to happen?

Bummer, but not unexpected at all. Going to suck watching Martinez get shelled again as a starter.

Maybe they will ramp Williamson up and get him here quicker

Time to consider Trevor Hoffman'ing him? If he can't stay healthy to start (90-100 pitches) might as well see if he can throwing in relief and get some value.

I remember the off-season hang-wringing about there being no room for poor Brandon Williamson. And that Martinez had to be in the rotation after his solid spring.

    Lodolo - 20 Starts

...there are 32 more starts that need to be covered. And there is little chance the above 5 guys cover even this much.

And they will be lucky to have even 5 out of the 6 healthy on OD.

I am not worried about getting anyone starts.
