We talked about that in the, why are pitchers hurt more often these days thread, a while back. People can laugh all they want, but something is definitely going on and I think what you mentioned could possibly play a part. Many say itís because pitchers are asked to throw the ball harder, but Iím not so sure thatís it. Heck they rarely throw more than 6 innings anymore. Guys like Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Randy Johnson and many many more threw the ball extremely hard, pitched way more than guys these days, and werenít hurt all the time.

If Boomers is attributed to hard work, then itís a compliment making jokes about us!

How many pitchers threw 95 in 1980?

    How many today?

Anyone who isn't looking at velocity as the culprit is probably either being facetious or not connecting the dots

It's not just velocity at the big league level.

It's the velocity they are throwing from the time they picked up a ball and showed some talent (5 to 13 years of age) through the big league level.

How many highschoolers were throwing 90 in 1980 compared to today?

I think there are many factors that people should be looking at, including velocity when determining the injury problems of pitchers today.

Ignoring things like bone development at young ages, diet, exercise, travel ball impact, kids/pitchers playing WAY more games at tender young ages, and claiming itís only velocity thatís the problem, may not be connecting all the dots either.

Baseball is a billion dollar business now. For players, it’s not about “chasing their Big League dreams” or whatever. It’s about making millions and millions of dollars. Players are asking more from their bodies now than in any time in the history of the game. Injuries are bound to happen. As WOY pointed out, everyone throws 95 now. Hitters are massive, jacked athletes.

The “kids these days” argument about sedentary lifestyles is an absolute non sequitur. If you wanna say young people are lazy and entitled, go for it. Sing your boomer heart out. But that does NOT apply to pro athletes. You can’t even conceive the amount of physical work that goes in to being paid millions of dollars to play sports. It starts young.

Nick Lodolo might have played some video games… but most of what he’s been doing since he was 10 years old is playing baseball, practicing baseball, or working out so he can be better at baseball.

    Marte
    CES
    Lodolo
    McLain
    Friedl

It's really no wonder that their record is what it is now. I get frustrated and disappointed with how many losses they've had later, but what can you reasonably expect with that many starters on on the IL/not palying?

This, and also the bullpen has been an absolute dumpster fire for two weeks now. The offense has been very bad, but we lose every close game. Diaz, Pagan, Cruz, and Wilson have all been 0th percentile relievers since the calendar turned to May.

Reds need to re-evaluate the pen and use of relievers. Cruz has fallen off, maybe needs less work; Diaz OTOH may have rust, needs more work; get Santillan up to the bigs, fresh arm has been effective; maybe time for Sims to move elsewhere; try to keep Martinez in pen for shorter stints so heís available more. Pen hasnít been terrible but with so little offense needs to be at peak.

Lot of pitching injuries but there always were. Lodoloís arm is healthy, wouldnít get too stressed about the groin injury. Heíll be back. Iíd try Carson Stiers and when ready Williamson in rotation and leave Nick Martinez in pen.

They don't measure pitch velocity the same way today as they did in 1980, so we'll never know.
I remember Maddux getting his cutter clocked at 88-90.. if he was clocked today, that would probably be at least 94.
Dibble might have thrown as hard as Chapman if he was clocked today (and still had his 1990 body , of course)
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

    Hi all.

Apologize if this one was already shared, but, seems timely with the discussion. ==> https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...ayers-weigh-in

Theory Iíve read is Dodgers destroy lefties so a good time to get Lodolo some rest. Not saying itís valid, but I saw it on the internet somewhere.

So starting Suter who is a lefty is the plan?

Suter is going to pitch one inning. He’s an opener. It’ll be Martinez game after that.

Reds now have 3 lefties in pen, they can’t be totally avoided.

Heck I hope this is true and itís not serious at all. In the Olden days it would be something you could pitch through or miss 1 start. Why not bring up Spiers then whoís pitched good in AAA. 40 man issue?

Iím ready to trade Lodolo and outlined by bullet points in the whoís going to be traded thread. Might as well get an OF with some controllable years that has power.
