    2024 Starting Pitchers Rotation

    2024 Starting Pitchers Rotation

The way free agent addition Frankie Montas has looked in camp, and the way Andrew Abbott looks like the guy who broke into the majors on a 10-game heater last summer, it’s tempting to think the Cincinnati Reds rotation is basically set a full month before Opening Day.

Not so fast, says Reds manager David Bell.

What's your guess of who opens the season in the starting rotation?

I wouldn't be shocked to see Nick Martinez as the fifth starter. When I was in Goodyear he was certainly hanging (and pitching) with Greene and Abbott most of the time.

I would guess Greene, Montas, Abbott, Ashcraft, and Martinez.

    This.

If and when Lodolo is ready, I think they’ll go 6-man for awhile until someone pitches themselves into the bullpen.

    I’m personally quite high on Martinez. I think he’s a 3ish WAR pitcher as a full-go SP.

I don't think it matters a whole lot who's in the rotation opening day as long as most of the staff is healthy. We're going to see 8-10 guys get their chance at starting games before the year is up. My thesis is if 2 of Montas, Greene, and Lodolo have good seasons, and one of the rooks(Phillips or Lowder IMO) is ready to step in if needed in the second half the Reds will make the post season.

    Re: 2024 Starting Pitchers Rotation

Bell said a week or two ago that they weren't going to build Martinez up to be a full-time starter, so that probably means he's not going to start the season in the rotation.

The Reds have also built more margin for error in their bullpen in 2024. Martinez is in the mix for a spot in the starting rotation, but Bell said that Martinez won’t build up all the way as a starting pitcher because Martinez is also in the mix for a bullpen role. If Martinez lands in the bullpen, then he’ll fill a multi-inning, high-leverage role.

The way David Bell talks in the linked article in the 1st post of this thread, He seems to think there are at least 7 guys who deserve consideration.

    Makes sense:

    - Hunter Greene
    - Nick Lodolo
    - Andrew Abbott
    - Brandon Williamson
    - Graham Ashcraft
    - Nick Martinez
    - Frankie Montas

I think, in order that it is

    Greene
    Ashcraft
    Abbott
    Montas
    Williamson

Martinez solidifies the pen. Lodolo starts in AAA building himself back up.

I'm tempted to say Montas 5th. Not because of talent/ability, but to give him that extra day/week off 5th starters get. His workload will be monitored closely. The other 4 are in line for inning jumps.

How many innings has each thrown so far this Spring? Funny.

What's really going to be funny is the reaction on this board in a couple weeks when all these pitchers go through a "dead arm" period almost all pitchers seem to go through in ST.

I believe, if my memory is partially solid, that there was a similar thread in February 2023 and none of those who responded to name five possible starters, or more accurately three.

and for sure no one included "I'm tempted" in a positive tone.

I'd say the odds that everyone will get at least 3 names right here are exceedingly good. If it's more than that, it's still a matter of not being more than 50 pct. wrong about it. If fewer than 3 are correct, then the answer is among a list that is clearly identified on the roster.
