Reds 2024 Opening Day News and Notes

Grand marshals for 2024 Opening Day parade announced. Here's who they are

The news is in: Dmitri Young and Calvin "Pokey" Reese will lead the 105th Findlay Market Opening Day Parade.

The former Cincinnati Reds stars will serve as grand marshals of the annual parade, which starts at noon in Over-the-Rhine on March 28.

Young, a two-time All-Star, was a first baseman and outfielder for the Reds from 1998-2001.

Reese made his MLB debut with the Reds in 1997 and played as a shortstop through 2001. He won two Gold Glove Awards with the Reds, and went on to win a World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

Re: Reds 2024 Opening Day News and Notes

The original Reds’ TV flagship station will broadcast the Opening Day game for the first time since 1995.

After a 29-year absence, the Cincinnati Reds return to TV flagship station WLWT-TV for the Opening Day game.

WLWT-TV — the city's first TV station dating back to February 1948 — televised the first Reds Opening Day two months later, when the Pittsburgh Pirates played the Reds at Crosley Field April 19, 1948.

WLWT-TV remained the Reds TV flagship station, and operated the regional Reds TV network for 47 years, until giving up the rights in 1995.

In 1995, WLWT-TV's last season as Reds flagship, the Reds TV network consisted of 17 TV stations in six states, five in Ohio; four in Kentucky; three in Indiana; three in Tennessee; and one each in West Virginia and North Carolina.

Sigh. Money talks and tradition walks.

With the Cincinnati Red Stockings, formed in 1869, the oldest team in the majors, the Reds, as a matter of sustaining historical deference, were annually granted MLB’s Opening Day game. None other was even scheduled. And Cincy responded with hearts and souls. Schools were closed so kids could attend the parade that placed the Reds in open-top convertibles, so they could wave to the crowds as they were slowly driven to Crosley Field. It was right out of a Norman Rockwell print, and all the baseball-crazy kids at P.S. 35 wished they’d been shipped to Cincy for the day.

    Current forecast looks good:
    https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClic...1&lon=-84.5144

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 57.

Meanwhile, I just cleared my driveway. Two feet of powder fell today. Spring suddenly delayed here in Vermont.

Ex-Reds draft pick to oppose Cincinnati on Opening Day at GABP

The Cincinnati Reds will have Frankie Montas, one of their most significant acquisitions of the offseason, as their starting pitcher on Opening Day at Great American Ball Park on Thursday against the Washington Nationals.

Some Reds fans will recognize the pitcher scheduled to start for the Nats: Right-hander Josiah Gray is a former second-round draft pick of the Reds.

In 2023, Gray posted an 8-13 record and 3.91 ERA.
Gray's 2023 campaign also included his first career All-Star selection.

Gray lost to the Reds on July 5, allowing home runs to Joey Votto and Elly De La Cruz. In five innings of work, Gray allowed three earned runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Re: Reds 2024 Opening Day News and Notes

Yes, it has snowed before on Opening Day in Cincinnati

    1977: Snowpocalypse

The Reds players woke up the morning of April 6 to find four inches of snow had fallen overnight. “No game today,” Cesar Geronimo said, looking out his window.
But the snowpocalypse didn’t stop the Riverfront Stadium crew on Opening Day. A staff of 60 worked its magic, shoveling and hauling the snow into trucks that carted the powder away so not a snowflake could be seen by game time.
The temperature was 38 degrees, making for a chilly opener. “My hands and feet were numb,” Geronimo said. But he got hot with a two-run homer to lead the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres.

1985: A little bit of everything

Neither snow nor rain nor gale-force winds could stop Pete Rose’s return to his hometown as the Reds’ player-manager on April 8. The Opening Day crowd experienced a full slate of weather – including sunshine for a bit – and two snow delays. Enquirer cartoonist Jerry Dowling drew a Zamboni clearing off the AstroTurf.

Rose stepped up for his homecoming, driving in three runs on two hits for a 4-1 Reds win over the Montreal Expos. “My philosophy is that if you get a couple of hits and you win, you’re always warmer than if you go 0-for-4 and lose,” Rose said.
