I remember it well. That was one heckuva a season. Every time he came to bat you were expecting a HR. No doubt the single greatest season I have witnessed as a Reds fan.

How about his batting lines in 2000 and 2001

    2000 - .500/.667/2.000/2.667 with a HR and a walk in 3 plate appearances.
    2001 - .250/.250/1.000/1.250 again with a HR in 4 plate appearances.
Another fun fact. Both his homers came against the Astros in Houston

Senior year in HS me on my way to college and then entering college me in 1988 was SO SO SO mad at Orel Hershiser for his ridiculous scoreless innings streak and overall excellence because in many other years Jackson would have won the Cy Young. Just not that year.

Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

That was the greatest Reds pitching season I have ever seen. He was totally dominant that year. 23 wins is really amazing in just about any era of baseball. Just too bad that Hershiser had that streak because there was no way he wasn't getting the Cy Young after that.

I wonder what the greatest pitching season ever that was eligible for, but didn't win, the Cy Young Award.

Keeping with the topic, let's just say Reds. Harang comes to mind off the bat.

    Rijo's 1993.

Led the league in starts, Ks, and WAR. Had seven or eight games blown by a leaky bullpen in the 8th or 9th inning. Never got much run support.

Maybe even better in the strike year - 14-2 with a 2.54 era - only runner up in cy young voting to…rookie Fernando Valenzuela. Seaver a better ERA+ but a less splashy national story…

So twice in the 1980s dodgers pitchers ganked a Cy from the franchise. Which added to 1980s me hating them all the more…

I wonder if any other baseball player/announcer won 237 games had a WAR of over 50 and announced games for 24 years other that Waite Hoyt, who I grew up listening to
