    Anyone Else Worried About Diaz?

His spring has been about as bad as any I can remember from a closer.

His K/9 seems fine, as does his BB/9. (Not great, but acceptably high.)

It's the H/9 and especially the HR/9 that are sky-high.

I realize I'm perpetually the low man on Diaz, so assuage my concerns, fellow RedsZoners.

I was thinking about this. He had a poor second half last year and has been a batting tee this spring. Relievers have a short shelf life. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a bad season.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

    It’s 5 innings. He’ll be fine.

I would be more worried if the rest of the bullpen wasn't looking so good.

When Diaz is your only really reliable reliever, then a lot is riding on him. When there are a group of guys who are all throwing the ball well, maybe someone else steps up as closer.

He didn’t really have a bad second half, he had a really bad September.

Re: Anyone Else Worried About Diaz?

To be honest I was kinda worried about Diaz at the end of last year-often wondering if he could throw 3 strikes before throwing 4 balls if a hitter just stood there with his bat on his shoulder.

Seems like I can remember a lot of hitters swinging and missing on sliders off of the plate while being ahead of Diaz in the count.

It's probably just me though and it has nothing to do this spring.

Closers are messy, they can vacillate mightily

Is his UCL intact? Shoulder barking?

    No? I’m good.

He throws basically all of his pitches outside of the zone. He’ll need to adjust that strategy once the league gets wise to it.

What Mr Madden said. He’s not throwing strikes most of the time. Rob Dibble had same issues by 1991. 92 especially. They just laid off his slider and his fastball lost just a few miles off it. He blew 10 saves at least in 1992 and Almost all were in the 9th. 2 against the Braves and that walk off against the Mets and Bobby Bonilla on Sunday night baseball. Still remember that mess.

Hits and HRs are subject to much more randomness than Ks and BBs. If the Ks and BBs are in line, don't worry, the rest will generally sort itself out.

That said, his HR rates the last two years maybe have been somewhat lucky.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Yeah, let’s play some games for real and see where things stand.

    It's spring.

    Luke Maile is OPSing 1.622.

    None of this means anything.
