No, you aren't good enough to hit .100 against MLB pitching

A recent poll of more than 2,000 sports fans conducted by SportsHandle found the following:

23% of fans think if they had gone pro they could reach Triple-A or the majors

On average, fans think they could hit .233 if given 100 MLB at bats

Over 1 in 4 fans (28%) believe they could hit for an average of .300 or better


Before I move on, allow me to pause for laughter. Holy freaking LOL, man.

Let me help you here for a second. The overwhelming majority of fans in 100 at-bats would hit ... are you ready?
The answer is: 000

Oh, and 100 strikeouts in 100 at-bats would likely be the final line. Maybe a few of you could foul a pitch or two off, somewhere buried in the 300 strikes you'd be seeing.

Of course, "seeing" is a stretch. Most people wouldn't even really see the ball.

If they grooved nothing but fastballs, I may foul tip one off after about the 90th pitch. But if they pitched me like an MLB hitter with sliders, curveballs, and 95+ fastballs, I’d flail around like a wounded duck. nfw.

I doubt the average ex high school baseball player who is still relatively young would be that much worse than what pitchers were hitting in the NL before the DH came in.

The gentlemen pitching in the majors prior to the DH were athletic enough to earn a roster spot as a starting pitcher in the majors. Your average HS baseball player is no where near that athletic and wouldn't come close to hitting .100

For the record, not only would I bat 0.000 in 100 major league at bats, I'd also leave a trail of yellow and brown on every trip back to the dugout

My grandpa - compared to average dudes - was a good ballplayer and a good athlete in his youth in the 1930s and 1940s. He had an uncle (by marriage) who played in the big leagues - Joe Heving. Heving also played some semipro ball locally, and and my grandpa said trying to hit off Heving was absurd. He said you'd stand at the plate and watch Heving throw a sinker ball that looked like it'd fall off a table.

Later on when my grandpa served in WWII he'd play on various army teams while serving stateside. One of the teams they played was the San Antonio Aviation Cadets, which had Howie Pollet on their staff pitching. My grandpa said he had a PA against Pollet and managed to hit a dribbler foul before looking silly and striking out.

I went to Kenyon College. The year before I got there, they faced Tim Belcher who was at Mount Vernon Nazarene a few miles away.

He pitched a 7 inning perfect game with 21 K’s. Kenyon’s team captain and best player fouled off one pitch in one of his at bats. It was the only time a Kenyon player made contact with a Belcher pitch the entire game.

They used to have batting cages down at Lunken Playfield, in Cincinnati when I was in middle school. 7th or 8th grade. It was cool. They had softball and baseball, slow pitch, fast pitch.

Fast pitch, they said, was 80-90 mph.

I played baseball at the time. So I thought I might try the 80-90 cage, for fun. I put my quarters in, helmet on, stepped into the cage, I was ready.

The first pitch was absolutely high and tight. I think. I didn't see it, but I heard it. That's when I knew for sure what they meant when they said "chin music."

I walked right back out of the cage. That one pitch was plenty enough to tell me I didn't belong there.

I'm now 62. Swinging a bat now hurts, but in my prime I could hit a 3B...in softball. My step-grandad was a helluva athlete. He's in the Cornell HOF. Pitched for the Tigers in the minors, and played Defensive End for the Lions. Ty Cobb was his manager. He told me stories of what pitchers who made it to the show could do. I have no doubt I'd have batted 1.000 if strikeouts counted as hits.

I do believe I batted in the same cage once... same result too
