Of course he should, cause "shooting straight" and "being tough" means you degrade others to the press to help foster unity and teamwork in the clubhouse and on the field.

Maybe he means Reds are better “set up” because they have more flexibility. They aren’t playing for anything this year.

Really have to discount all these statements, it’s all PR, happy talk. Hope Wiemers improves over the last two seasons.
Some notes on Wiemer from the Inquirer:

When Wiemer was in the big leagues in April and May, he had a new setup. His hands started out over the plate, and he had his arms fully extended forward. It didn't work, and Wiemer hit .154 in 19 big league games this year.
Then during the summer, when Wiemer was in Triple-A, he modified his stance again. In July, he hit .333 with a 1.011 on-base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS) for the Nashville Sounds.
”I carried some adjustments into the beginning of the season, but I think I overdid it,” Wiemer said. “I was taking away from some of my athleticism and wasn’t getting the results I wanted. I shifted back to not exactly what I was doing, but a nice little blend. That’s been going well, and I’m trying to keep that rolling.”
Now, Wiemer uses a more controlled toe tap as well as more hand movement than he used at the beginning of the season.
Wiemer was also injured much of this season, one reason why he’s not been in the bigs.

Wiemer had to wait to put those adjustments into place. This was the first season where he spent any time on the injured list. He spent two weeks in May on the big league injured list with left knee discomfort, and he missed time in June with a groin injury.

The bottom line is Wiemers hasn’t hit in two seasons. At his age of development, that’s a very bad sign.

I feel badly for Reds fans who are constantly required to take a leap of faith with struggling performers.

This is probably Jose Barrero redux. If you think otherwise you are likely headed for a disappointment. Some posters liked the Austin Slater pickup. It’s all cut from the same cloth. Wishing and hoping.

    No conclusions have been drawn.

Just some new facts and information about Wiemer and what’s he’s been dealing with this season. Do with it as you want.

Ok. But I’d rather occasionally be focused on Reds pickup of a successful player. Not reading excuses for guys who’ve struggled.

Candelario was coming off a successful season, some of the relievers. But recently it’s a bunch of underdogs. I like underdogs once in awhile, but recently it’s one reclamation project after another.

    Agree
And now I'm a reclamation project as a fan. I'm too old for PR baloney.

Montas was the only reclamation project this off season.

During this season, the reclamation projects have mostly been for the 25th and 26th player on the roster, who have had to play too much due to the extreme number of injuries.

It’s not like this is an organizational philosophy that has dominated this team’s roster decisions. It’s the result of a season filled with bad luck and injuries.

Just read through the Reds rosters for the last few seasons. Replete with reclamation projects, AAA guys, AAAA guys, marginal players. Like a team of last resort.

How did Reds address the “bad luck” and injuries this year? With nice in-season additions? Solid replacements for McLain, Marte, CES, others who struggled? No, Once payroll was set on Opening Day, Reds were out of the solid player acquisition business.

Reds biggest need last off season was a veteran starter. You recall, folks wanted Sonny Gray. Who did they sign? Montas. You admit he was a reclamation project.

It has been very much part of the fabric of this ballclub.

Let’s also not forget the team needed a RH outfielder. Yes, McLain and CES being out forced Steer and India to play infield, but nothing was done to address that obvious need, after the mentioned players went out. I would still argue they needed that RH outfielder with some pop, even before the mentioned players went down.

This is the first season of the latest rebuild where the Reds came into the season expecting to compete. They spent $6OM on this season alone adding a veteran infielder with a solid bat, and 4 relievers with extended success at the MLB level and one former ace coming off of an injury.

So no, the fabric of this ballclub coming into this season was not reclamation projects, no matter how many times you keep saying it.

Btw, the Reds did expand the payroll to add Espinal when McLain was hurt. Not a world beater, but not a reclamation project either.

Reds are bad in free-agency and only mid when it comes to developing prospects. Toss in the fact that they’re cheap, and it doesn’t matter whether the reclamation projects work or not.

The only edge they have against the league is in starting pitching, and that should continue. They need new eyes in analyzing how to spend their money.

I think they need to be more active on the trade market.

The Reds lost McLain, Freidl, Marte, later on CES. The team cannot hit. And you’re arguing the acquisition of Espinal? My word.

They spent in the off-season? Sure after they divested their only two meaningful contracts, Votto and Moose, and the payroll was so little.

But it’s not just about spending. It’s about standards. The Reds seem to meet your standards. I’d like them to try harder.

Gray was not going to sign here. He wanted STL. End of story.

There was several starting pitchers available , for whatever reason they haven't chosen wisely in the free agent market.
