LOUISVILLE RECAP - Louisville was awful today, succumbing 11-3.

If Brett Kennedy is the answer for Frankie Montas being put on the IL, then the question needs to be changed. He allowed 9 runs in 2+ innings today.
The bullpen did its job, 2 unearned runs the rest of the way. Wynne (2.2), Kriske (1.0), Kravetz (0.2), Branche (0.1) and Zulueta (1.0). Randy Wynne's ERA is 0.00 in 10 innings to date.

PJ Higgins stroked a single and a double.
Austin Wynns singled twice and walked.

There were high expectations for the Bats outfield heading into 2024, but they have failed to materialize.

    Rece Hinds is hitting .158.
Jacob Hurtubise is hitting .250, and has played in 3 games. Hurtubise has not made an appearance since March 31st.
Blake Dunn is hitting .214, and has not made a start since April 10th.

Is someone in the organization going to tell us what Blake and Jacob injuries are? How long are they out.

Not a whole lot to get excited about at the AA or AAA level so far. I guess Aguiar and Maxwell could be picked out as the few bright spots. Cabrera, Duno, Serwinoski, Collier, and Stewart are all off to encouraging starts.

I'd like to see the entire rosters of Chattanooga and Louisville get better results with regard to getting on base for the Offense and keeping people off of base for the Defense.

It's pretty easy to focus on individual performances at the minor league level as we look for those players who may someday reach the show, but maintaining an organizational level of consistency (and I point to the Brewers' team-wide willingness at the major league level to go opposite way with a pitch and take what the Pitcher's give them, or the constant influx of talent that comes through the Cardinals' organization) is mandatory for the smaller-market REDS to compete on a regular basis for an NL playoff appearance.

Free-swinging should not be an option at the minor league level. Developing the ability to produce a quality at-bat each and every time should be. Right now that's not happening at Chattanooga or Louisville. CES and EDLC were able to use their incredible physical talents to compensate for poor at-bats. Few players are going to have that kind of talent. Every player can have the T. J. Friedl type of talent and develop that into a quality baseball player through intelligent and disciplined adjustments towards the various pitchers and pitches one faces. There's no reason to just be successful against the opposite-arm pitcher. A quality at-bat can overcome that.

Louisville was loaded with talent last season, but it's pretty average right now, or even below average right now. I'd love to see the team OBP improve. Can't steal bases if you can't get on base.

On the pitching side, we've made a concerted effort to bring in pitchers with high K-rates, hoping to teach them how to walk fewer hitters. Currently the K-Rates are below average, while the walk rates are very high in both Chattanooga and Louisville. League-wide, the Southern League is more difficult to get on base on an annual basis, but that's not the case against Chattanooga so far this season, one of two teams in the Southern League not able to take advantage of the league's pitching strengths.

Only about a sixth of the season is completed so far,...3 to 4 weeks for the two leagues, so there's a lot of Spring Training adjustments still going on at the moment. If it was just the AA team or the AAA team, that would be understandable, but it's both teams, and I'm hoping their early season poor numbers both at the plate and on the mound take a turn for the better beginning tomorrow.

At the rate we're losing players at the Major League level, we're going to be needing help soon from the Minors and I'd like to see guys who come up being less of the free-swingers and more of the quality at-bat players, not giving away outs on a regular basis. A lineup can have a Boog Powell type (CES) and make it work, but they can't have more than one.
"One problem with people who have no vices is that they're pretty sure to have some annoying virtues."
