JC may win player of the month.

The Reds defense infield defense is abysmal, arguably worst in baseball, which makes it even more impressive how well the pitching staff has faired this year.
Davey Concepcion made 30 errors his first full season.

    Ozzie Smith made 25.

Give the guy some space to grow. He’s made a lot of really great plays at SS this year.

Three of the four Reds starting infielders are out with injuries or suspension. Marte, McLain and CES. So I don’t think 2024 is a good barometer of the defensive infield. 3/4 of the infielders are substitutes at their positions.

EDLC is very young. His 14 errors include 3 in one bad game (which Reds won). He has elite range and throwing ability so it makes sense to give him some time.

Bingo. He's 22. A vast majority of those errors are simply mental mistakes, bad decisions, that a majority of rookies would make (as you show above). He feels he has to make a play, when there are times it's best to just hold'em.

McLain is going to be our 2Bman. What a combo up the middle.

Marte? We'll justy have to wait and see. He showed us what he's capable of in his short stint last year. They signed Candelario to a 3 yr deal, so when he's not playing 3rd he'll be at 1B or Dh'ing. You want his bat in that lineup every day IMO. Even when Marte comes back.

"It is, without exception, the only major statistic in sports which is a record of what an observer thinks should have been accomplished,” Bill James, the father of sabermetrics, wrote in his “1977 Baseball Abstract.” “It’s a moral judgment, really.” James, supremely utilitarian, regarded the moral dimension of the error as a failing; it didn’t capture the nuances of what had really occurred on the field. And James was right: as a metric, the error is more or less completely useless."

I liked this sentence from the above article:
" Just because a statistic is useless doesn’t mean that it’s meaningless."

    And more...:
"Doing the right thing means risking an error. And making an error can be evidence of the right decision."

Given the choice... I'm more concerned about his hitting than I am about his errors. We have a dozen shortstops in the system and some will most likely be better than him on defense. His bat and what he does on base is his differentiator... not his defense.

I'm concerned that he might be the only guy to hit a HR and a triple from different sides of the plate in a game but I'm unsure how to search for it.

I do know whenever Elly makes a mental mistake I remind myself that he's only 22 and jeez... I sure can remember what stupid things I did at that age

Alas none of them were on a MLB diamond

    It's baffling.

Actually, it's not. But it should be.

Nothing is more self loathing as hating a talented player on your team that MLB is pimping

Nice to see Elly get his Offensive side of the plate going this weekend, and he did it against the Brewers. That's huge. We would have swept them if the rest of the team had played as well Offensively.

What's useless is a scorekeeper. Only about 20% of the errors that occur in a game are credited as Errors. I think most people, when speaking about Errors are also including the 80% of errors that don't get counted as a stat. Bill James never analyzed those errors and their effect on a game during his long career simply because there wasn't a number attached to it, the blindside of sabremetrics.

I guess it depends on level of concern and reaction to it. If you are concerned about his OPS against LHP, that's a legit concern (I find the K% concerns to be a bit overwrought). If your reaction to it is that he needs to be sent to AAA or banished to a strict platoon, that's silly.

By the way, for those of you that are concerned about Elly vs LHP, you probably shouldn't be as he's essentially league average vs LHP

    vs RHP OPS+ 132
    vs LHP OPS+ 97

He's only going to get better too.
