Ashcraft stingy, but run support proves scarce

During the road trip to Texas and San Diego, the Reds’ rotation posted a 2.21 ERA.

Their lineup batted just .201 with 60 strikeouts.

Not only is the lineup missing three starters of late, it has been without TJ Friedl and Matt McLain since Opening Day because of injuries. Noelvi Marte is serving an 80-game suspension for PED use.

Illnesses roughed up the clubhouse in mid-April, yet the Reds still have a 16-15 record.

The Reds continue to spiral in their discouraging slide
Despite missing some key pieces, the Reds had their best start in a decade. The high point was on April 24, when the Reds clinched the season series win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

There was a big celebration in the clubhouse that night. The Reds showed that they were capable of playing up to the level of one of the best teams in baseball.

The Reds havenít played well since that series. In late April, three different illnesses spread around the clubhouse, which caused four different players to miss time.

First baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand fractured his hand on April 27. He tried to play through it for 11 days before he discovered the full extent of the injury.

After losing a winnable series to a Giants the uphill climb continues in a Reds season that isnít going the way the team expected.

To turn their season around, the Reds are counting on the development of their young core. Some of those players are injured, and most of the rest of that group has underperformed.

"We canít think about that," Montas said. "We just have to keep going out there and keep on grinding. This is not going to be the whole season. Weíre all working to get out of this. Thatís the only thing we can control."

Including the first Philadelphia series, I believe they’re 5-14 so far

They have had the third toughest schedule so far this season. This should be expected until the schedule eases.

BTW from here on out it's the fourth easiest.

"It ain't over till it's over"
If the Reds want to feel just how deep the muck of May is impacting all their big plans for this season, they can stare at the next three series on the schedule, when they get a face full of Shohei Ohtani and the gazillion-dollar Dodgers for seven of 10 games.

But if they want a quick reminder of how six-month baseball seasons and MLB postseasons work, they can stare across the field in Arizona before they leave for Los Angeles.

The Diamondbacks were in first place and 16 games over .500 on July 1 last year, then tailspun into mid-August to fall 13 games back and drop below .500.

They, of course, ended up in the World Series.

“It’s a long season, and it’s just about understanding that,” Hunter Greene said of the example the Diamondbacks set last year. “You’ve seen teams that pick up speed at the end, in the middle – it happens.”

Diamondbacks coach Dave McKay, who spend decades with manager Tony La Russa in Oakland and St. Louis doesn’t count the Reds out yet – not after all the experience he’s had in his career. “It’s a good team,” he said.

His 2006 St. Louis Cardinals, who had two eight-game losing streaks and a seven-gamer on the way to winning the NL Central and the World Series.

"Learning from that, it could be anybody at any time," said outfielder Will Benson, "If we keep playing, who knows where this is going to all end? Becuase it really could be us."

To come back from a deep hole, a team needs the potential to get very hot. It isn’t automatic. Below average teams tend to be below average.

So if Reds are going to be late bloomers this season, they need to get some things straightened out. Like their offensive production. They can’t just rely on the “law of averages”.

I said this in another thread, but the big ray of hope is that SD currently has the last wildcard, and they are below 500
Reds are only 2.5 games out of the wildcard.. Pretty much anyone other than the Marlins and Rockies can still get hot and win the last wildcard. Despite this recent losing streak, only 2.5 out of the wildcard.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

They're about to face the Padres. At least they won't see Darvish or Cease in this series.

Plus the Padres have a double header today, so maybe they'll be exhausted.

Let's see if the Reds can take advantage of that.

With Diaz and Cruz getting it done tonight, it needs to be stated that there's another Pitcher ready to contribute.

Santillan saved his 10th tonight for Louisville.

In 18.1 IP of 9th/10th inning, Tony Santillan has given up only 1 HR, 11 hits, 6ER w/ a K/BB ratio of 26/10.

    Right-handers have a 20/4 K/BB ratio in 10.2 Innings w/ Zero HR's, while Left-handers are hitting .167 against him over 11.1 Innings.

With our Starting Pitching and our Relief Pitching, we can win a lot of games just by scoring 3 Runs, even at the GAB as we saw tonight.

Fangraphs shows Santillan as out of minor league options. I’d guess that’s the reason he’s still in the minors. Once he is promoted, he can’t go back to minors without clearing waivers, and he probably wouldn’t clear.

But the time is coming, I’d guess the next time there’s an opening he’ll come up.

I did not expect the Reds to have a 3 game sweep of the mighty Dodgers. Baseball is a funny game.
