    Jay Allen: Helium Alert

If I were to tell you one of the Reds recent 1st round picks is tearing it up in Dayton and launching HRs at an incredible clip you probably say yeah- Cam Collier. True but the answer I was looking for is Jay Allen

Quick rewind Allen was a 1st round, comp A pick taken after Matt McLain and before Andrew Abbott. (Matt Nelson is in there too). He was a super athletic 5 tool player that most of the predraft reports had as a guy with huge potential, but was developmental because baseball was his 3rd sport and he did not have a lot of reps

His first season in pro ball was incredibly successful, basically a 1.000 OPS bat with outstanding strike zone control and vaulted up to #6 on the Reds prospect lists. The problem is the last 2 years he was hurt with swing impacting injuries and his numbers showed it and he dropped to #25 prospect this year well below most people’s radar.

He came into this year completely healthy and the numbers have been steroid Bondsish so far, the most impressive of which has been K zone control where he has 15% K and BB rates. The one red flag to keep an eye on is health. In addition to the injuries the last 2 seasons, he missed 2 weeks this year with a hamstring. The good news he was raking before the hammy and he has been raking since he came back

If he can get his path back on track he's house money for the Reds. They're going to need a couple of these High A guys to become contributors.

Another 3-4 tonight with his 6th HR. Most interesting stat for him is 6HR's and 1 double... no triples. Watching the game tonight you can see he's locked in. He's not missing anything hittable over the plate.

Is he old for High A or is there another reason he doesn't seem to have much hype?

His first year in the organization was excellent, which excited some publications. Then the next year and (especially) the year after, he was abysmal. Publications don't want to get burned by him twice, so they're going to be more cautious about soaring him up prospect lists.

He was injured most of last year and only played 31 games. Allen will be 21 this entire year, and that's age appropriate for high A. I think he was splitting time between baseball and football in high school so when you combine that with a lost 2023 he hasn't played a whole lot of baseball compared to other prospects his age. If he has a breakout year in 2024 then he's easily a top 10 in the system guy considering his talent and high draft status(#30 overall).
