Who remembers the opening game of 1980, when he picked up his own blocked field goal and ran it in for a TD to beat the Bears while admitting later that he was high on cocaine? Good times

Something tells me that Garo was pretty clumsy in bedroom activities:

Sandro Vitiello was my Art teacher and Ian Sunter was my music teacher. And if you remember those guys well you have suffered as much as I have following the Bengals.

They had Nick Lowery in camp and cut him for Ian Sunter in 1980. Chris Bahr blew games by missing XP along with FG in 1978-79. So he was replaced and lasted longer than I expected with the Raiders.

I think Vitiello lasted 2 maybe 3 games if I remember right. Made maybe 2 kicks out of 6 or 7. Missed a couple of XPs. Sunter wasn't much better.
Didn't Bahr and Breech trade houses? I didn't know about Lowery but it doesn't surprise me at all. Such a Bengals thing to do.
I remember Paul Brown's last year of coaching but barely. Looking at the draft picks he made most of the early picks after he quit coaching were busts. But he hit on several mid late round players several from small schools. Seems like that would be difficult in a time without film on small school players readily available.

All the best players constantly talk about this. Until there's a culture to expect to win a World Series, and this is driven by players who have been there and done it before, a team that constantly fails to win playoff series on a regular basis have a feeling that it's luck that determines who wins and who loses. There's an extra drive by Champions and Champions of any sport have that drive and motivation that's at a whole other level than the average sports professional.

Just being a major league baseball player doesn't mean that you have the motivation that it takes to be better than your peers. As others have said, they have all been motivated to get this far, but "this far" is only a ticket to the show, not a ticket to the World Series. That takes motivation that just a few have compared to the rest.

Nick was also in 2 other camps in 79. I read about this when I read up on who was in camp in 1980 through Pro Football Weekly. I was a real training camp nerd and had also been hoping they would draft Dwight Stepheson the C from Alabama. That much I remember. Kickers back then. Could be like relievers. Volatile and could be up and down. Mark Moseley had a bad 1980 that would have led any rookie K to be cut. But he was a vet and rebounded especially in 1982.

That 1976 draft where Bahr was picked. They had I think 8 picks in the first 4 rounds. From the Bill Bergey trade that messed up their middle badly for 1974. Went from a Top 5 defense to one that lost 3 games in the last 1-2 minutes because they couldn’t defend back when defenses ruled more easily.

I like Archie Griffin but Bill Walsh had left. He would have known how to use him better. They didn’t and he then started to get injured. Billy Brooks was good in 77-78 then got injured badly. If they wanted someone more ready and durable it would have been better to draft Sammy White who went later in the 1st to the Vikings.

Only Reggie Williams and Glenn Bujnoch last past 1979 besides Archie. But that’s not the biggest thing for me. It was trading Charlie Joiner instead of maybe a 2nd for Coy Bacon. Bacon was great for them but he could be had for a 2nd because Chargers were rebuilding. Those 1978-79 season were a product of a bad draft and some bad decisions and the OL getting old fast and unproductive. Ken Anderson was getting beat up doing 10 -15 yard drop backs. Luckily Forrest and Lindy Infante came in to change the culture and offense

Firing a manager with 5 games left in the season is pretty pointless.

I'm prepared to laugh at the replacement choice.

If it gets Larkin out of the booth, I might be able to suffer through his love of bunting for a couple years until his 1990s approach to baseball gets him canned too...

Reds save on his trip to Cleveland and Chicago, that should pay for the caterer fee for the next owners meeting
