Minor League Game Thread 5/6/24 MONDAY

ACL-REDS - The Baby Reds spank the Baby BrewCrew 7-3.

AReds hurlers where magnificent, allowing just 1 hit. Somehow, that translated to 3 runs. But, a win is a win.

Dominic Scheffler started and might still be looking for home plate. The 6'4" lefty walked 5 batters in an inning and a third. Scheffler is the first Swiss national - born and raised in Switzerland - to sign a professional baseball contract. So, there you go, history was made. At 19, he can get the fastball up to 94, and that's some pretty serious cheese. He also has shows a good breaking ball at times. The surname, Scheffler, either means one who takes after sheep, OR, one who makes casks and barrels. Those two aren't even close.

Next pitcher up was David Lorduy. He went 1.2 hitless innings, striking out 3. Lorduy played in the Dominican Summer League in '23, and closed that season in a rush. Over his last 7 appearances, Lurdoy showed this line: 30 IP, 15 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 BB, 35 K. One to watch.

Nick Payero followed and went 4 strong innings allowing 1 hit, walking 2 and fanning 5.
Edwin Cervantes set them down in order for an inning.
Abraham Gaitan retired 2 batters and walked 1.
Lisnerkin Lantigua recorded the final out.

Talk about an international pitching staff. The Reds employed hurlers from Switzerland, Colombia, Nicaragua, the Dominic Republic, Mexico and the United States.

Sammy Stafura reached base all 5 times up. He singled twice, doubled, tripled and walked. However, he did commit 2 errors.
    Kyle Henley doubled twice.
    Jacob Hurtubise singled twice.
Sheng-En Lin showed a good eye, walking 4 times.
    Diego Omana walked twice.

On the flip side, AReds batters struck out 16 times.
Alfredo Alcantara went 0 for 5, with 5 Ks.
Luis Leones went 0-4, with 4 Ks.

It's difficult to get extra-base hits at this level. For Stafura to get both a double and a triple in the same game instantly puts him on a player-watch for me. His 4-4 with a Walk only makes me pay more attention to him. But, 7 Total Bases in one game is very difficult to accomplish in this league. He also had a Stolen Base, so that counts towards Total Bases in how I calculate them, so 8 Total Bases on Offense is huge.

A lot of teams were hitting well yesterday in Arizona, but it still is something to notice for me.

Re: Minor League Game Thread 5/6/24 MONDAY

Nicholas (Nick) Payero is an interesting player.

A UDFA for the Cincinnati REDS out of Seton Hall University, he pitched 7.2 innings last year for the ACL REDS. The results were bad. Really bad. But, a judgement to give him another shot isn't going to be based on 7.2 Innings of work. Back with the ACL REDS and now with a huge 3.2 years-above-average age difference (he turns 24 in six weeks) he threw for 4 innings in yesterday's win, giving up the game's only hit, but, he picked off a runner, walked 2, struck out 5, but didn't hit a batter (5 in the game), throw a wild pitch (3 in the game), commit a balk (2 in the game). He entered the game with a 2-run lead and left the game with a 2-run lead. If they ever revise how a Pitcher gets a win, and it's long been needed to be done, he would have gotten the Win today as he was easily the game's best pitcher. He threw 57 pitches, about the normal amount the REDS have Pitchers throwing at Dayton and Daytona who are Starters.

With his huge age difference, he's going to be given a quick opportunity to prove himself capable of advancing to the next level before the end of May as he needs to prove immediately that he doesn't belong here, one way or another. Great start so far. One or two more performances like this back-to-back following yesterday's outing, and he may be able to start packing his bags for a trip to Daytona. His next chance to pitch should be Saturday.

Brian Edgington, currently 2.8 years-above-average age in Daytona, is dominating the league through 6 starts and he's ready to take the next step and prove himself against more age-appropriate competition up in Dayton. There are currently 7 Pitchers who have had Starts in Dayton, but only Edgington, Jose Franco (age 23) and Adam Serwinowski (turns 20 a month from today) have been pitching on a regular rotation.

Re: Minor League Game Thread 5/6/24 MONDAY

    Quick highlights from last night:

Jay Allen II singled twice and homered (6). His 6 home runs is one behind league leader Cam Collier. Jay is leading the league in BA, SLG and OPS. He is 2nd in OBP. .387/.500/.694/1.194. His K/BB is 14/11.
Hector Rodriguez single twice and threw out a runner at second.

    Alfredo Duno homered (3).
    Jose Montero - 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6K. 1.67 ERA.
    Gabriel Aguilera - 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.
Daytona's team ERA is 2.55, 3/4s of a run lower than the second-best team ERA.

Tyler Callihan singled, doubled, homered (3) and was hit by a pitch. He also stole a base (9).
Allan Cerda singled and homered (3).
    Julian Aguiar - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.
Zach Maxwell pitched a scoreless 9th inning. His ERA stays at 0.00 on the season. He has pitched a total of 11.1 innings, and struck out 22.

Livan Soto singled twice. OPS is .918.
Edwin Rios singled and homered (5). OPS is 1.037.
    Peyton Burdick homered (7).
    Carson Spiers excelled. 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. ERA drops to 2.86.
Tony Sanitllan shut down opposing hitters in the 9th. His ERA stands at 2.93. 4 of the 5 earned runs charted to Santillan came in 1 miserable outing. Without that hiccup his ERA would be 0.68.

Maxwell is clearly over matching AA hiters with 17.5 K9 and 3.2 H9. Time for a promotion.
