Reds Top Prospects - May 2024 Edition

GRADE A (Top 25 Prospect in the game and Future All-Star Potential)

    1. Noelvi Marte 3B REDS / Charlie Condon / Travis Bazzana – Marte occupies the spot for now while still technically having rookie eligibility, but will soon be replaced by whoever the Reds take 2nd overall in the upcoming draft. I’m hoping for Condon but would still be happy with Bazzana.

    2. Edwin Arroyo SS AA – will miss all year with a ST injury, could likely be eclipsed by Lowder or Collier if their current performance continues throughout the year.

    3. Rhett Lowder RHP AA – Dominated at Dayton, can he continue at Chattanooga? Could be a rotation staple come next Opening Day, not out of the question for it to be sooner.

GRADE B (Top 100 Prospect in the game and Future Starter Potential)

    4. Cam Collier 1B A+ - Finally showing what we all thought he could be, he could end the year as a top 25 guy in the game if he continues to perform like this. Could also end the year in Chattanooga.

    5. Sal Stewart 2B/3B A+ - Not far behind his draftmate Collier, you could make a good argument he’s been a better overall pro and has more future defensive value.

    6. Ricardo Cabrera 3B A – Would like to see him get a bump to Dayton by the ASB, but he is proving worthy of his billing as a premier international FA from a couple years ago.

    7. Alfredo Duno C A – Similar to Cabrera except one class behind, Duno could also rocket up these ranks, especially if he can stick behind the plate. The bat is very real.

GRADE C (Should have major league career)

    8. Chase Petty RHP AA – The most promising of the disappointing trio, Petty had his first OK outing of the year last night but has still been underwhelming so far.

    9. Connor Phillips RHP AAA – Phillips has been a disaster in 2024 after earning a (premature) big league cup of coffee last season. Let’s hope he figures it out and turns things around.

    10. Lyon Richardson RHP AAA – Richardson hasn’t been quite as bad as the other two above him so far this year, but he probably also had the lowest prospect status heading into the year. I could see him as a future big league reliever in Cincy, possibly even later this year.

    ON THE RADAR (Honorable Mention)

    11. Hector Rodriguez OF A+ – all he does is hit, hit, hit no matter what.

    12. Carlos Jorge CF A+ - disappointing start to 2024 along accompanies the position switch to CF, still a small sample size so hopefully he heats up along with the weather

    13. Jay Allen OF A+ - opposite of Jorge, finally seems to have put it all together to match his pedigree, albeit in the small sample size of 2024. Would like to see him get a bump to AA and keep it up.

    14. Rece Hinds RF AAA – hasn’t done much to shake the boom or bust reputation. Can hit the ball a mile but the plate discipline doesn’t seem to be there. Will it ever be?

    15. Leo Balcazar SS A+ - also a disappointing start after missing all of last season with an injury, his spot is one of the more vulnerable ones on this list if he doesn’t figure it out soon.
(tie) Julian Aguiar RHP AA – would like to see higher K numbers, but his overall performance is still solid.
(tie) Ty Floyd LHP INJURED – the pedigree and stuff could bump him up higher but he has yet to throw a professional pitch.

KEEP AN EYE ON (Too Early to Tell)

    Sammy Stafura SS ACL
    Shin-Leng En P/SS/CF ACL
    Adolfo Sanchez OF
    Naibel Mariano SS
    Cole Schoenwetter RHP

    SOME NOTES

Blake Dunn and Allan Cerda are two obvious omissions – with Dunn I feel like he’s too old to be a prospect and will be called up imminently anyway, losing that status. With Cerda I’d like to see him continue to hit like he has this year for a longer period before moving him ahead of someone like Hinds or Balcazar, but if he continues at this pace and/or especially after a promotion, he could easily be there. Would like to see promotions by the end of the month for Dunn and Allen.

Nice write up. I'm going to the Bats game tomorrow. I was wondering if there was anyone to keep an eye on. It looks like NO is the answer.

    1. Marte
    2. Lowder
    3. Collier
    4. Arroyo
    5. Petty
    6. Phillips
    7. Duno
    8. Cabrera
    9. Stewart
    10. Richardson
    11. Ty Floyd
    12. Jay Allen
    13. S. Stafura
    14. J. Aguiar
    15. tie with Zach Maxwell and C. Schoenwetter

Carlos Jorge has 4 BB to 43 SO I'm out on him until that drastically improves. I'm in wait and see mode on the 2024 international signings. Bazzana or Condon would be at worst #2 and likely #1 on this list.

Sweringer should be on your "keep an eye on" list as well.

Spiers should be on this list somewhere.

That is interesting about Stewart. If that is how MLB scouts feel about him, he should be good tradebait to acquire a much needed bat this winter. I would say this July, but the team is probably not going to be in it.

Maybe he's actually really good, and we're under rating him?

I watch a lot of the minor league games and I'd say Stewart is pretty advanced for his age and level. He's made the adjustment to being elevated better than most of the others here. Collier is obviously trading power for average and has become much more aggressive. Stewart hits the both everywhere hard. He isn't afraid to walk and has shown a penchant to get the big hit.

At this point he's looking like a legit bat being grown at home for once.

Seems like Lowder has some adjusting to do at AA.

    Chase Petty last 4 starts:

    20.0 IP / 14 H / 4 ER / 5 BB / 23 K.

    Thats a 1.80 ERA / 0.95 WHIP / 10.35 K9 / 4.6/1 K/BB ratio.

Petty showed us last year what his potential is, not sure why there has been any real doubt.

Javi Rivera, while not a top prospect, has been zoned in during his last 2 stars. 11 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB. 19 K.

Phillips continues to be terrible. Grade C may be too high.

Don't know if this has been posted before, but they are calling this a 500 foot home run by Peyton Burdick.
