    Blake Dunn up, Martini down

The Reds have called up outfield prospect Blake Dunn. Hes another player in the farm system who worked his way from an off-the-radar prospect into a potential big league contributor. He has impressed with his speed, pop, aggressiveness at the plate and hustle.

The Reds are facing a left-handed starter tonight, and Dunn should help in those matchups. He helps balance out the roster with another right-handed hitter. He can also make a big impact on defense in a big ballpark at Coors Field.

Excellent news. I hope Dunn in the line-up in RF. Tonight's OF should be Friedl in LF, Fairchild in CF and Dunn in RF against the LHP. It also should help a lot in Coors Field's big outfield.

    Good one!

Good luck to Dunn. Maybe he can get off to a confidence-building start in hitter-friendly Coors Field.

I think Dunn is gonna play against a lot of righties too. Close to an everyday player. So the Hurtubise/Martini spot is for a pure reserve player and Hurtubise makes sense in that role. Hes a good defender, good baserunner, good bunter etc. Hopefully a well-rounded version of what they were trying to do with Bubba Thompson.

I just hope we are getting the 2023 version of Dunn and not the 2024 version

For sure. 850 OPS v. RHP last year.

Ive been waiting for this move, though Dunn was striking out a fair amount at AAA.

Dunn is probably going to play against all lefties and backup otherwise. Reds have needed a platoon RHH outfielder for some time.

A Dunn/Hurtubise platoon might actually produce some WAR. Dunn crushes lefties and has good power. Both are good defenders and baserunners. If you put them together, maybe you get .250/.350/.420 with 40 steals and plus defense.

Cincinnati Reds call up prospect Blake Dunn, who battled his way to the big leagues

Over the last few years, not many Cincinnati Reds prospects have played with more intensity or aggression than center fielder Blake Dunn.

He overcame being a 15th round pick and having nearly two seasons wiped away by injuries and made it to the big leagues.

Dunn’s style of play resembles Reds outfielders TJ Friedl and Jacob Hurtubise. Dunn has great speed, an aggressive approach at the plate and shows excellent intangibles.

He has also tapped into some potential as a power hitter. That combination of skills helped Dunn rise from an off-the-radar prospect into a player the Reds see a role for at the big league level in the long run.

“The thing we really like about him is he plays the game kind of like a right-handed version of (TJ) Friedl,” Reds senior advisor Shawn Pender said last year.

“He does a lot of things fundamentally sound. He’s an aggressive hitter, but he’s really developed plate coverage and a better understanding of who he is offensively. He just plays the game the right way. You know you are going to get great effort and a significant amount of production.”

As long as Reds have outfielders Fraley, Friedl, Benson and Steer, I don’t think Dunn/Hurtubise will be a platoon. Right now, I don’t see Hurtubise beating out any of them as a starting outfielder against RHP.

Dunn has been playing much better the last month in AAA and as an older prospect now is the time to give him some run. I think he can be at least a Chris Heisey type, and that has value.
