Reds only gave Wmson one minor league rehab outing, doesn’t seem like a very gradual approach - after the guy missed almost a full season.

Nor am I convinced this is all a matter of Reds and Wmson following information or advice. There is often discretion in these situations. The pitcher chose the route and Reds accepted that.

In the end, I’m glad he should be back for 2026, but the whole thing raises questions for me.

Yet in his first 4 mlb starts he was only throwing 60 some odd pitches. About the same he would have been doing in AAA. Would it have been better if the injury had occurred in Louisville instead of Cincinnati?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Not sure the two are comparable. A major leaguer throwing minor league rehab innings might not go full tilt. Might not throw with the same velocity or spin. Might build up more gradually.

One is rehab, the other is intense competition. So it’s possible he would have been injured at AAA, but it’s also possible he would not have.

Seems to me a rest and rehab approach would have benefited from a winter of more rest and rehab.
He had a shoulder injury that was keeping him out. He couldn’t pitch. This elbow injury is a different injury than the one that kept him out most of this season.

Which may very well had developed because of adjustments made due to the shoulder injury. Like the MCU it’s all connected.

I guess you’re satisfied that the cost of a sore pitching shoulder is two lost seasons. (Possibly more.) I don’t accept that as necessarily a standard or acceptable result.

Nor do I accept that a sore shoulder inevitably must lead to TJ elbow surgery.

You don’t question these outcomes. I’m not so easily persuaded.

I'm curious. What's your background in sports medicine? Orthopedics? Kinesiology?

Baseball players getting hurt playing baseball seems pretty normal to me. I'm fairly certain any player who hadn't played much this year wants to get on the field, it's what they do, it's who they are. I can't begrudge a player for getting injured playing baseball.

You don’t have to be a physician to question a bad outcome.

And BTW, one poster wrote (approvingly) that Wmson was being lightly used with about sixty pitches per outing. His third MLB outing this year was 82 pitches at St, Louis. Raises even more questions about how he was handled.

Re: 2024 Reds Injury Updates part 2

    From Lance McAlister
Hunter Greene is coming back today. Why? He's healthy.
He wants to pitch. Why wouldn't he pitch?

My head spins at the back and forth narratives of some fans.
I don't know how those fans keep track of what they are mad about.

'why pitch him? it doesn't matter"
'why hasn't he pitched, it was a bump on his elbow?"
    "Cincinnati Reds abuse pitchers'
'Why don't they let guys go more than 5 innings?'
    'players are soft today"
    'what if he gets hurt?'
"there is no upside, the season is over"
    "they have given up"

Hunter Greene banged his elbow August 14.
The Reds were cautious and put him on the IL.
He now feels fine. He threw a simulated game this week
He won't throw a full workload today.
But he wants to finish out the season.

If they didn't pitch Greene, people would complain about the unknown pitcher they called up from AAA to pitch the game. And complain about lack of depth.

Healthy guys play. He's healthy. He wants to pitch. He's pitching.

    Deal with it.

Lol! Lance captured the essence of virtually every internet sports discussion board ever!

Sept. 24: 2B Jonathan India being tested for concussion after hit-by-pitch
India initially stayed in the Reds’ 6-1 loss to the Guardians on Tuesday evening after getting hit in the head by a pitch in the fifth inning, but he was lifted from the game before the bottom of the seventh inning and was in concussion protocol postgame.

“I just think with the game the way it was and [India] feeling a little light-headed, we figured, 'Why take a chance?'” interim manager Freddie Benavides said. “He’s being evaluated and we’ll see how he is tomorrow, and if he’s good, he’ll be in the lineup.”

Sept. 24: RHP Julian Aguiar (right elbow sprain) placed on 15-day injured list; RHP Ian Gibaut (right forearm strain) activated off 60-day IL
Aguiar, who allowed seven earned runs in four-plus innings in his last start against the Braves, was placed on the injured list on Tuesday, ending his season.

Interim manager Freddie Benavides said that Aguiar, the Reds’ No. 11 prospect, first felt the injury in a side session he threw after his start. Aguiar didn’t travel with the team to Cleveland on Monday.
