Please discuss signings and player statuses here. Also, a big thank you to Jaxred for his annual draft tracker, which can be seen here.

Can I be the first to complain that the Reds haven't signed any picks yet?

    What's the holdup?!

    C'mon!

Bob is so cheap. Might as well just go trade Elly now.

Updated with 1 new "expected to sign" (Trystan Smith) and a couple new college commitments I found out about.

Luke Hayden sounds like he's a Red.

"It was stressful there for a while," Hayden said. "But when we worked out a deal with the Reds, they were just five picks away, so I knew in the next five minutes I was going to be taken."

"I'm happy for Luke," said his high school coach, Bob Jones. "It's great. I presume he will sign. He wants to play pro ball."

"I definitely knew they had a lot of interest," Hayden said. "I had a pre-draft workout with them in June. I didn't throw, I just showed up talked with their general manager and some other people in the office. At the combine, I had another meeting with them, so I knew definitely knew they were one of the teams that would possibly end up selecting me today.

"I'm pumped to be a part of the Reds."

Re: 2024 Reds draft pick signing tracker, news, and discussion

Just a reminder; clubs can exceed their pool amount by up to five percent, but have to pay a 75% penalty on every dollar they go over. After five percent, they lose draft picks and pay a penalty. Obviously they don't want that to happen.

So they can spend just under $800,000 more and pay the penalty on that. It seems to me they did that the year they found Friedl. Someone correct me if that's not right.

Teams that exceed their bonus pool face a penalty. Clubs that outspend their allotment by 0-5 percent pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. At higher thresholds, teams lose future picks: a first-rounder and a 75 percent tax for surpassing their pool by more than 5 and up to 10 percent; a first- and a second-rounder and a 100 percent tax for more than 10 and up to 15 percent; and two first-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 15 percent.

I am really curious to see how things play out with Jacob Friend. He is class of 25 at Davidson and it is very rare for Davidson students to leave early. On the flip side I would doubt the Reds would not have used such a high pick on him without an understanding with him about his intentions. Could be as easy as for next two years he gets to finish the season in late August to do Fall semester classes. It is not as if the Reds would be counting on him for the fall the next few years.

Coach Taylor makes it sound like he is leaving:

"Jacob has been a consistent player for three years," said coach Rucker Taylor. "His feel for the zone and athleticism should help him to continue to develop. He's grown a lot over his time at Davidson, but I believe his best baseball is still in front of him. Very happy for him and his future."

Well Jacob sound like he will be joining the Reds

    https://www.gazetteleader.com/arling...-draft-9230157

Until July 15, no Yorktown High School baseball player had ever been chosen in the Major League draft. Then, battery mates and good friends who played on the same 2021 Liberty District tournament championship Yorktown team were picked within an hour of each other that day in the fourth and sixth rounds.

Right-handed pitcher Nate Knowles was chosen in the fourth round (124th pick overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. Then catcher Jacob Friend was selected in round six (179th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds. ...

Friend was watching the draft when he was chosen by the Reds.

“It’s a surreal feeling and pretty cool,” Friend said. “It’s exciting for me and all of my family.”
    ...

Initially a preferred walk-on, Friend made a quick impact for Davidson with his speed, athleticism, catching skills and homering in his first college fall game, and became a three-year starter.

“The Davidson coaches helped me succeed and propel my talent,” Friend said. “I always believed this [getting drafted] could happen.”

Friend’s longtime hitting coach is Chris Berset, the new Bishop O’Connell High School head baseball coach, who coincidentally played in the Reds’ organization for a number of seasons.

“I have learned a lot from him about hitting,” Friend said.

John Skaggs was Yorktown’s head coach back in 2021.

“Jacob has the tools and a lot of speed for a catcher, and he gets on base a lot,” Skagg said. “I’m super pumped I had the chance to coach both of them and be part of their success.”
“The guys we've had for the most part have been serviceable at this level.”

The way the draft works these days, teams have already agreed to deals with 90% of their top 10 picks. It just takes a while to formalize/announce it for whatever reason.

And sometimes 1-2 later picks are high-end prospects drafted as fallbacks, guys whom the team will throw money at if a top-10 guy's deal falls through for whatever reason, but who otherwise are not really expected to sign.
