Most players are challenged a lot as rookies as pitchers try to get a read on whether they can get around on the fastball and which locations they are strong or weak at. After they've been around the league a couple of times, then pitchers start pitching these guys "tough." Its why we see so many guys come up and put up good numbers early and then tail off into oblivion. Wiemers rookie numbers certainly include some of that in them. After pitchers start pitching these guys tough, some guys adjust and regain the hitting form they showed early, but guys with a 30 to 35 hit tool usually don't. The Brewers sent Wiemers down, so he evidently didn't make those adjustments.

The Reds already have three guys who were good out of the gate in Benson, CES and Hinds. Two of them surely have shown they are suffering now that pitchers have started to pitch them "tough." The other got sent down before he was exposed. All three have 30 to 35 hit tools. The Reds didn't really need another guy like that. That hit tool is the reason I don't think the Reds should give much consideration to Benson or CES next season when they start trying to figure out how to fill their positions and it's why I don't think Wiemers will end up as anything more than a spare part.

If they had an average defender who could hit to fill that spot, Siani would be on the bench immediately.
On what planet does CES have a 30/35 hit tool? Same with Benson. Each had over an 800 ops last year. Sophomore slumps and injuries happen. Maybe they aren’t as good as last year but they don’t have 30/35 hit tools.

It was definitely not the money. It was getting a player they've been interested in for a while and the opportunity was there while he could be bought low, while Montas was moving in order to be used as asset acquisitioning so as long as our chances of reaching the playoffs were less than 50% and they were less than 20%.

CES prospect scouting report shows his hit tool at 35. Judging by what he did this year before he went on the IL, that’s too high. So does Benson’s.

Weimers isn't any more the player that's posted the Major League numbers he's posted so far any more than Rece Hinds is Mike Schmidt on steroids.

There's likely a bright future for Weimers with the REDS and he's going to have a legitimate shot next season for 400+ PA's on the major league team to develop that future. For Weimers next Spring, the future is now.

Judging from his minor league performance and last year, it might be wrong. But let’s write em all off.

He swings at everything. That isn’t his injury. He was bad enough that he needs to win a job. 35 hit tool is pretty terrible. CES, Benson, Hinds and Wiemers all with that.

CES has a 28.6 SO rate in MLB. In today's game that's an acceptable number if he hits for enough power. He's likely not going to BB much so the slugging needs to be there. Benson is at 35% and 39.9 this year so I'd say he's a lost cause.

Yeah, if CES and Benson have a 30-35 hit tool, then I’m not concerned that Wiemer has that too.

I noticed today that Reds are 28th in MLB in batting average, 19th in OPS, 25th in wRC+.

And they supposedly are looking for defensive players who can’t hit?

Montas has a Brewers'y vibe to him. I could see him catching lightning in a bottle.

My young kids even asked "was good Frankie or bad Frankie pitching tonight?" And then once July rolled around it felt like you had goodFrankie/badFrankie innings, not just games.

I think the Reds could have gotten more, in the sense of value, for Montas. They got nothing but roster filler (if that) IMO.

As Bowden said in the Athletic (paraphrasing) the Reds didn’t get better but saved some money. I believe that once the discussion turned to selling, no longer trying to add for a stretch drive, cost saving was the main goal.

I don’t blame them, as many do. Reds are a frugal team and they viewed Montas salary as wasteful at this point in the season.

They’ll regroup for next year and will make better acquisitions this winter. There will be happier moments.
