No doubt and I thought it was cool watching my dad play in county bands as a kid. I can remember going camping and dad pulling out his acoustic. Next thing you know, we’d have 20 or 30 strangers gathered around for sing a longs of the old country classics and some honky tonk. Good times!

This is a very good interview with Matteo, whom I just recently discovered. He seems to take his finger picking to a whole another level

One of my favorite bassists is Marcus Miller (I realize that's not novel), but I can't slap. Just flat-out can't do it. It's annoying, although completely unnecessary to what I do. It would be fun to learn some of his stuff.

Under the Bridge by RHCP took me a few weeks to learn on the guitar. Hotel California took a couple months.

Mr. Buckingham talks about his unique playing style and then illustrates with a performance of "Big Love."

A similar theme to Hotel California that is much easier to learn is She Says by Howie Day.

Not a guitarist, but I’ve been playing drums since I was a wee lad so I figured I’d join in.
For me, the hardest songs are ones where my style of playing doesn’t really match the “feel” of the drummer on the song I’m doing. For example, Dave Grohl is my all time favorite drummer. The reason I wanted to be a drummer. So of course that’s who I emulated my style after and even though it evolved into a thing of its own as I kept playing, that Grohl/Bonham area is still my sweet spot.
So when I was in a band and we wanted to cover “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” by Primus, it took a while. I was capable of doing the double bass parts and the hi-hat work, but I’d listen back to it and it just didn’t sound right even if that notes were all there, you know what I mean?I eventually got it though.
Music is weird like that sometimes.
I’ll also add, one of the guys I’ve played in bands with the most over the years is just a phenomenal guitarist. Hands as fast as lightning. Incredible memory, probably knows every scale in existence, just ridiculously talented.
He had trouble with “Bulls on Parade” by Rage Against the Machine. Technically there was no reason he shouldn’t have knocked that one out of the park, but Tom Morello is just so unique. It was one of those things just like when I had to learn the Primus song. Even when the notes were all there, it still didn’t sound right. Took him a couple weeks, which was an eternity for him.
