Whats the max you'd pay for an Elly extension?

What kind of contract would it take to make Elly a lifetime Red? Bobby Witt Jr recently got 11 /290 from the Royals.

Elly is currently 22. Hes a superstar and I want to overpay to keep him here. I'd offer him a 10/325 to start and would be willing to go higher/longer.

How much would you be willing to pay him?

    Is Elly better than Witt?

If he's willing to sign here, they'll sign him. If he won't then it won't matter what they offer. I'd say the Bobby Witt contract is the neighborhood we'd be looking at

I'd love to sign him for 10 years. But, not sure he'll sign with Cincy for that long.

At the worst I'd try and buy out 2 years of free agency for a little more security. I think that is something you could get. That would be a 7 year deal. He'd still reach free agency at 29.

Not really sure but Elly definitely has the bigger persona.

At age 22 yes and it's not close. Elly is on pace to have a better year this season than Witt did last year at 23. I'd say he's flown past the Witt Jr contract and would be in the 350+ range now. I don't think Boras is going to give up any FA years without a huge price attached.

$300M over 10 years beginning next season. He'd never take it as he has a $500M contract in his future.

I’d sign him for whatever it takes. He’s a generational talent.

With the caveat that they spend and build a team around him. I don’t want to see what happened to Junior happen to him. And with the current CEO and front office, I unfortunately thinks it’s likely.

When I raised this topic in the game thread(thank you, Herbdizzle for finishing my sentence... lol). As I said in the game thread, if you are dead serious about keeping this kid in a Reds uniform for the entirety of this prime years, offer him 50 million dollars a year for 10 years. The Dodgers or Yankees are going to be paying him well in excess of that a few years from now. If you want to keep him here you are gonna have to be bold, VERY BOLD! Give him 50 mil and make him and Boras tell you no thanks. Then go higher.

If I understand things correctly, he's under Reds control until after the 2029 season. I expect him to be traded at the trade deadline of the 2029 season. I'll still be a fan wherever he goes.

I believe the Reds spent 103 million this year. With those kind of numbers, I wouldn’t devote roughly 1/3 of the salary to one player. If they were willing to spend 150 million a year, then I would be willing to sign him long term, but I find that number to be highly unlikely for this cheap organization.

I love Elly and he is going to be a superstar, but devoting 1/3 of your 103 million dollar salary to one player, doesn’t seem like a great strategy for winning championships to me. I realize this opinion will be highly unpopular around here, but given the amount of money the Reds routinely spend yearly, that’s how I feel.

Edited to add: I’ll use the Orioles as an example, since their 101 million dollar payroll is very close to ours. Their highest paid player is Corbin Burnes at 15.6 million. They are once again doing quite well, without paying position players mega contracts.

You don’t have to give him Bryce Harper money ‘cause you’re buying out 5 pre free agency years. That’s why this contract should be about $300 million and 400-500

This case is another example of why MLB’s system sucks. In the NFL you could franchise a guy like this
