Which is why I offered the $300M for the next 10 years. That $500M contract that's in his future will be as soon as the REDS no longer have his "baseball" legal rights, which in reality, none of the sports' worlds player salary tiers have any legality if it ever went to the courts. Someday, all sports players will have 100% free agency as it should be.

    2027: $19M
2028: $30M (would-be first year of free agency)
    2029: $35M
    2030: $35M
    2031: $35M (player option)
    2032: $35M (player option)
    2033: $35M (player option)
    2034: $35M (player option)
    2035: $33M (club option)
    2036: $28M (club option)
    2037: $28M (club option)

There was also a $7,777,777 signing bonus.

This contract is the baseline for Elly's contract offer. If the Reds don't sign him up this offseason, then it will become progressively more difficult to sign him to an extension each subsequent year. (Assuming he continues to improve.)

My guess is the Reds will have to offer at least a $15mm signing bonus, and then bump up the #'s across the board. If the Reds can buy out 2 or 3 years of his free agency, then it is a win for the Reds.
I would never offer this deal. He's gone as soon as that first player option kicks in.

I don't think we'll see him give away that many years. If the Reds are lucky, Elly and Boras will engage in a deal that provides an extra year or two of control, and it will require the Reds to overpay on his arb years.

I agree 100%. I believe that's the REDS' only option when it comes to keeping him as long as possible. I'd be focusing on trying to get two more years added to Greene's contract right now, and not be worrying about Elly's at the moment.

9 years of team control > 6 years of team control.

I think the best the Reds can hope for is to buy out his arbitration years plus one. Elly is an elite player. He is going to get a big payday that the Reds cannot afford.

How is that 9 years of team control? I count 7.

Try like heck for 2, but accept 1.

Idk but I’ll say this, my status as a Reds fan kinda is contingent that they do so, barring some kind of major regression.

I know this…I LOVE the Reds and have since the early 80’s. I go to games and I watch the rest…..but when Elly isn’t in the lineup, it’s a gigantic bummer.

I have to wonder how many are like me or likely more so

I think Boras kills the chances of keeping him. Boras is over 70 and worth half a billion. I wish he’d go away.

Elly is YOUNG, so YOUNG. He’s smart but he’s also still very very green and there has to be a way to use his love of the game and everything and throw out a 7 year $250,000,000 contract and see if they bite.

So you'd be willing to give him roughly $150MM for those extra 2 years of control? That seems like not a such great idea to me.

This is where I am too. Weve got 2 extremely awesome young talents in Elly and Hunter. If the Reds dont make them decade long stars Im probably out for good.

The Reds have him signed for what basically amounts to a (non-guaranteed) 5 year/$80,000,000 right now. (that's assuming he matches Soto as the player who gets the most through their team controlled-years in history)

So that's where you have to start when it comes to rates, not with FA market-rates.

I think we'll see those number continue to rise, and if he keeps this up he'll shatter the records. I have it at 5/$100MM. Which is why something like 7/$200MM is more than fair.

I love Elly and he is going to be a superstar, but devoting 1/3 of your 103 million dollar salary to one player, doesn’t seem like a great strategy for winning championships to me. I realize this opinion will be highly unpopular around here, but given the amount of money the Reds routinely spend yearly, that’s how I feel.

Edited to add: I’ll use the Orioles as an example, since their 101 million dollar payroll is very close to ours. Their highest paid player is Corbin Burnes at 15.6 million. They are once again doing quite well, without paying position players mega contracts.

The Orioles have a 100 million payroll while they’ve got star talent that has not reached free agency. If they want to keep that group together, that number will go way up. You have to get lucky with young talent to win it without big contracts. Orioles could do it. I would hope the Reds are in that spot in a couple years. But, the Reds have been cheap for my entire life and last went to a World Series when I was 4 years old. I would prefer they pay their great players and we at least get to watch those guys, even if we don’t win a World Series with them.

My answer would have to be based upon how much money I was making as a result of being on the team. Will the Reds draw an extra million solely because EDLC is playing? How much does the average fan spend. Suppose he is injured and spends a couple of months on the IL? Does attendance crater? That is the bottom line. How much does he increase ownership profit?
